...come on...guess!Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902839629217130433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2863545505587940137.post-84637951385684198022013-03-23T10:37:00.003-04:002013-03-23T10:37:52.892-04:00Locs no more....Hey y'all!

Sooooo, this happened:

I know, I know. How does THEE LocRocker go and chop off her locs? Honestly, y'all...I've been wanting to chop them for quite some time. As much as I adored my locs, I just felt like it was time for change. They were getting long, hot and heavy. I missed feeling water on my scalp. I wanted the TWA again. And so I woke up last Wednesday and just - chopped 'em.

I have zero regrets. I've got a hair appointment next week to get the fro shaped up and colored and I am 100% sure that I will loc up again. Maybe this summer...and with a larger set. Call me nutty but I'm excited about starting a new set and sharing it with y'all again.

What does this mean for Loc Rocker? It means nada. The site will still be up and running. In fact, I am working on a cleaner site with better navigation. I hate that I left LR stagnant for so long but it's just proof of how I just wasn't into my locs anymore. I rocked 'em for almost 5 years and they were beautiful.

But - it's a new time and new season and I felt like they needed to go. OH! And in other news - my daughter was born and is now almost 3 months. I do updates of her here.

If you are interested in contributing to Loc Rocker in any way, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Love & Light!Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902839629217130433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2863545505587940137.post-48792971462689147832012-10-02T07:00:00.000-04:002012-10-02T07:00:04.940-04:00My random funky hairdo!Surprise! I actually did a hairstyle. How awesome am I? ;) This is a big deal because lately I just haven't been "into" doing my hair. I did pipe cleaner curls a few weeks back and they lasted forever. After those, I just felt...uninspired. And lazy. The other day, I cranked out 2 flat twists for a Beauty Blogger of Central Florida meetup.

Not too shabby, uh? 'Twas such an easy style so I won't even bother with the technique. And I don't even know if it should be considered a "style" as it took me no more than 2 minutes to do.

It was hard getting those bobby pins to stay put. I had to keep re-pinning them to keep the 2 twists together. Lots of thanks to my sister friend Courtney of Phyrra as she was the one that captured these photos.

Quick hair stats:
My locs are so in need of some pampering. I want more color and I want a cut. A great deal of my thinner locs from the double headed dragons are becoming long and thin and I just want to get rid of them. I'd loose a good 2-3 inches of locs but I'm okay with that as length has never been a big deal to me. I am still struggling with the trying to beat the urge to shave my head. Ha!

Oh! And I am almost 6 months pregnant. I know, riiiiight?! I've been documenting the journey on Clumps of Mascara but never formally told my Loc Rocker fam. After our baby girl arrives, I'll be anxiously trying to step foot at my loctician's salon for some pampering.

Tis all for now!
But when I strolled through Tumblr and saw these beautiful lady, her locs AND a watermark, I just knew I had to share.
Short locs rock. And they are 10x cooler than the long locs I'm rockin' right now. A: Hmm, that's a good question. The answer is no. My locs had different needs in their
infancy. I loved castile soap (here's why I stopped using it) but haven't used it on my locs
in over a year. Mind you, I am NOT a product junkie and have never been one. I stick to
products that I like but I'm still a sucker for trying new thing; but only when my old products
have run out. But I have tried several shampoos over the months. My favorite shampoo in
life will always be Peter Lamas' Purifying Shampoo but honey, that's an expensive shampoo
and mama be on a budget. So yeah. I'm using different products all the time.

A: I guess I'm a DIY'er because yeah - I haven't been to my loctician in a
year and a half. I miss her dearly and my locs could probably using the
A: Ohhh mannnn, you remember that? Those were the days. Last year
(in Summer of 2011) a few loc rockers and I came up with the idea to
freeform during the summer. It was a fantastic idea and anyone who
wanted to join us and refrain from retwisting or interlocking their roots
during the summer were welcome to join us. It was a great journey and
gave many of us an appreciation for our afro roots. That said, I'll probably
do it again this year. I did some freeforming throughout 2012 so it won't
be so much of a "challenge" for me any more. But I really do enjoy not
retwisting my hair in the summer.

A: Yikes! That's a tough one and I think you're better off consulting
with a loctician on that one. While I combined my locs, I did so at a
time when they weren't yet mature. I would imagine that combining
mature locs may be a little more of a challenge. But it certainly isn't
impossible. I would definitely refer to a loctician regarding this question.

A: If you've been doing your natural hair for that long, I'm pretty sure
you can can handle starting your own locs. The hardest part would be
making sure that you've parted your hair evenly -if you care about
that kind of thing. Some loc rockers feel better doing their own hair
and if by all means you trust yourself, than I say go for it. I believe
all styles and all textures of hair can be maintained outside of the salon.

I've seen a lot of imitators out there but her dolls look the best. I've got a Barbie with an afro but soooooo need to add this one to my stash. Beautiful, ain't she?

I so need to do one of these videos. I get a ton of questions about my locs and 90% of the questions are the saaaame questions. And I learned a lot about Chesca's locs.

She doesn't use clips. (I don't either)
She doesn't use product to retwist. (I don't either)
She doesn't get her locs professionally done. (I don't either)

The best thing about growing locs is learning how to simplify. She covers quite a bit. Check it ouuuuut...Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902839629217130433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2863545505587940137.post-76325611750960250632012-06-14T13:53:00.000-04:002012-06-14T13:53:00.133-04:00Curl Box event in Brooklyn, NY
Oh man, am I jealous about this one...

The wonderful and talented Myleik of Curl Box is doing a meet and greet and I soooo wish I could make it. If you haven't heard of the Curl Box, honey, you've been living under a rock. This is the ONLY monthly sample subscription for natural hair. It's the best way to try out different brands and products without breaking the bank. I've been wanting to get my hands on it but it's sold out every month. Curl Box has reached quite the success in only a few months. In supporting it, you're supporting a black owned business AND the black owned businesses being showcased in the sample boxes.

Let me know if you plan on attending. Oh! And have you tried Curl Box?Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902839629217130433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2863545505587940137.post-35663223548159549562012-06-12T14:54:00.000-04:002012-06-12T14:54:00.065-04:00Locs at 3.5 yearsTalk about the jump in updates, uh? I mean, let's face it....after the first year of growing locs, nothing exciting happens. It's the first year that is full of new products, methods, styles, emotions and after that - you get set in your ways and life moves on.

Hence why I had very few updates after a year. 2.5 years later and my locs are 100% mature. Ain't no doubt about it. They are growing, growing and growing. And that's about it. I haven't colored my locs in 8 months and for no other reasons than I'm lazy and too cheap to pay anyone to do it.

Of course I WANT color but I'm okay without it right now. Most of my combined locs have become one and I've cut off some of the 2-headed dragons.

I kinda regret that because now it makes the locs in the back look super thin. I want the locs to grow out a bit more and then I'll trim all around so that the thicker part of my combined locs is what stands out.

Maintenance is ridiculously easy. At one point I was washing weekly because of my itchy scalp. The scalp has cleared up some and now I'm washing once every 2-3 weeks and palm rolling every other time. I love that palm rolling has become optional for me. I'm not dependent on it and only do it when I feel like it. Not on a schedule. Which works for me and my lifestyle.

I've been meaning to get my annual professional appointment but I don't have any real reasons. I don't have any complaints about my locs so why fix what ain't broken, ya know?

Products-wise I've been obsessed with Alaffia Ginger Shampoo. It smells divine, gives the locs moisture and doesn't weigh them down. I've been using that and Jane Carter's Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo and following up with her Leave-In conditioner. Which will ALWAYS be a staple for me.

Very rarely do I use oils. I find that using them too often just contributes to my itchy scalp. Which sounds backwards, I know. I may run oil through my hair and locs once per wash.

And that's that. Styling is limited (because I suffer from migraines when I wear updos and tight styles for too long) but I'm okay wearing my hair down or in a mid-ponytail most days. My edges are grateful.

I can't even believe it's been almost 4 years. Wooooo!!Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902839629217130433noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2863545505587940137.post-34640611603715399182012-06-04T16:42:00.003-04:002012-06-04T16:42:57.186-04:00Loc Workshop this week in Orlando!Hey y'all!

Yep - so this weekend the lovely Rikki of Loc Inspirations will be hosting one of her popular Loc Inspirations workshops. I've always wanted to attend one of these but they never seemed to fit in my schedule. Buuuut, I will definitely be making it this weekend and I can't wait! Y'all know I am the Queen of No Hairstyles simply because I find that most hairstyles seem to make my head hurt within an hour. I'll be chit chatting with Rikki to see if she has any recommendations for folx like me.

I will be at the 11am class.

Oh! And please don't think you have to have traditional locs to attend. If you're an enthusiast, rock braids (extensions or natural) or just want to get some insight on how to create gorgeous styles on loc'd and braided hurr, come out to the class.

The class is $15 if you register ahead of time and then it's $17 if you register at the door. You can register here. Hope to see you there!

In the past 3-4 months, I may have retwisted twice. Just out of sheer laziness. In fact, at one point I just HAD to retwist because the new growth was starting to do it's own weird loc'ing thing. And by weird, I mean they were loc'ing up with each other. Which does nothing but make taking them a part a freaking pain.

Summer time is here and I'll do even less retwisting because there is something about the summer that makes my scalp insanely itchy. And the only relief I ever get is from washing the hair. And I'm not down for retwisting just to wash a few days later. No ma'am...

So yep. The 3.5 year old locs are still doin' their thang!Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902839629217130433noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2863545505587940137.post-46640189650794302812012-06-01T10:23:00.001-04:002012-06-01T10:23:05.145-04:00Loc Spotlight: Gorgeous thick locsHoooow beautiful are these locs? *swoon*
Okay - somehow I've found some inspiration to be more active with natural hair blogging and so I'll be back with more Loc Rocker updates. YES! Finally, uh? Between my locs, guest posts and random gorgeous pictures of loc'd ladies and gents on the innanet - I'll be doing a lot more updating.
It's me. I know. Pretend like I haven't disappeared for a good month, okay? I still owe you a 3-year update and I promise that will be coming sooner rather than later.

I was strolling through Tumblr and came across a pic of these gorgeous locs.

Hey y'all! Happy New Year! I hope 2012 has been treating you well so far. I spent the Christmas holiday in Maryland with Esposo and the in laws. Most of you all know I'm a Florida girl, right? That means I complain when the temperature gets below 70 degrees. Such was the case during my visit. While I've been in much colder weather, I was cold enough to want to cover my head during most of the trip.

I am always getting questions about protecting the locs during the winter and this is one topic I can't speak much on simply because, uh....I live in Florida. Where winter doesn't exist. A few weeks ago I found this amaziiiiiing website that has satin lined hats and scarves.

Be still my heart.

I need these. I need all of them. For one, they have so many different adorable styles. And satin is so much better for our locs. Scarves and lint-y hats can result in the dreaded lint and we all know how much that sucks. The satin, however...locks moisture in and can prevent your locs from getting dry and brittle. Those with longer locs may struggle with trying to stuff their hair into these hats but still, protecting the crown from Jack Frost is better than nothing, uh? Must.get.these.

Hatsome has a sale going on too. You can snag most of these hats for $25. Not a bad price. Granted you could sew satin pieces in your own hats but I'm one of those "I'd rather pay someone else to do something I'm too lazy to do myself" kind of peeps.

How do you protect your locs during the winter months?

Oh, and speaking of winter. It was 30 degrees last night here in Orlando, y'all. 30.
Several loc'ers do this and I just happen to be another one that is jumping on the bandwagon.

While I have found brushing my locs and scalp to be a heavenly experience, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Especially to those who are super anal about the lines in their scalps. Considering I'm a part-time freeformer who could care less about straight lines, brushing works GREAT for me. Although I've heard about the concept for awhile, I don't know what inspired me to actually purchase a brush. I was roaming around in Sally Beauty Supply one day and just scooped one up.

Speaking of brushes - do you know it's been over THREE years since I've felt one on my head? That's a long time yo. Long long time. That said, I forgot how wonderful a soft bristled brush can feel. Lawd. It's like heaven, y'all. Heaven. When I purchased said brush I made sure it wasn't too rough 'n tough. I didn't want to risk my locs snagging.

After washing the locs one morning, I brushed the scalp and gently brushed some locs.

It felt divine. It felt like a much needed scalp massage. So much so that I didn't want to stop. Brushing is the bomb dot com. Fo reals.

Pro's
-It feels amaziiiiiing on the scalp.
-It's a nice little treat for your locs.

Con's
-Can damage baby locs or those with looser textures. I wouldn't even consider this idea until your locs have completely matured.
-May disrupt loc lines on scalp.

I'm not sure what the benefits are brushing the locs. It's really the scalp that I like to focus on. I usually like to spray a bit of water on my scalp before brushing and get to it.

So yeah. That's that, y'all. Have you ever brushed your locs? Or would you?

How adorable!

I'm not even going to front, y'all. I played with Barbie dolls up until I was in 6th grade. My sister was 5 years younger than me and while I ended up giving her all of my Babies, I would still get down on the floor and play with her. Aaaaand of course there were not any natural hair Barbies back then. I actually own one that does have an afro and I am so excited to see more hit the scene.

She's so fly, ain't she? Huffington Post reported that you can actually re-create the curly fro hairstyle by following this tutorial. If I'm lazy enough I just may sit down one afternoon and curl my straight-haired graduation Barbie's hair.

own searching and posting pictures of beautiful loc rockers; men, women,
The other day I posted the above picture on the Loc Rocker Facebook page and said that I was just itchin' to cut my locs off.

Folx went off and told me not to do it. I'm so dramatic. As annoying as these longer locs are, I doubt I would cut them all off. I never vowed to wear locs for the rest of my life, but I'm really not ready to cut them. But I'd be lyin' if I said having longer locs is fun.

Because it ain't. I SO miss my shorter locs. I really do. As a newbie loc'er, I spent a lot of time desiring and admiring longer locs. I couldn't WAIT until I got there. Now that I'm here, I feel like I should revisit the shorter locs.
Is that a bit insane or what? I know. I'm nuts. Truthfully though, I've never been a long hair lover. Some women are head over heels in love with loooooong hair and really, it does nothing for me. It's shorter hair that I find is chic, memorable and funky. Okay and let's face it - shorter hair always makes me look slimmer in the face. Yes, it's a vain illusion but I feel like my cheekbones do some serious poppin' when my hair is up. But when it's down....*yawn*
I'm not in the mood to do curls because I've been doing some sweaty workouts so the curls will just die in sweat. And as far as coloring, believe it or not, I'm not in the mood for that either. I hate that I'm in such a funk with my locs when tomorrow they celebrate THREE years.
Maybe I'll be a good blogger and actually do a video and take some pictures. Yep. I think I will.
Any other loc'ers going through that "My hair is longer but it's boring me" phase?Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11902839629217130433noreply@blogger.com2
