Satin hats: Perfect for Loc'd Ladies in Colder Climates

Hey y'all! Happy New Year! I hope 2012 has been treating you well so far. I spent the Christmas holiday in Maryland with Esposo and the in laws. Most of you all know I'm a Florida girl, right? That means I complain when the temperature gets below 70 degrees. Such was the case during my visit. While I've been in much colder weather, I was cold enough to want to cover my head during most of the trip.

I am always getting questions about protecting the locs during the winter and this is one topic I can't speak much on simply because, uh....I live in Florida. Where winter doesn't exist. A few weeks ago I found this amaziiiiiing website that has satin lined hats and scarves.

Be still my heart.

I need these. I need all of them. For one, they have so many different adorable styles. And satin is so much better for our locs. Scarves and lint-y hats can result in the dreaded lint and we all know how much that sucks. The satin, however...locks moisture in and can prevent your locs from getting dry and brittle. Those with longer locs may struggle with trying to stuff their hair into these hats but still, protecting the crown from Jack Frost is better than nothing, uh? Must.get.these.

Hatsome has a sale going on too. You can snag most of these hats for $25. Not a bad price. Granted you could sew satin pieces in your own hats but I'm one of those "I'd rather pay someone else to do something I'm too lazy to do myself" kind of peeps.

Oh, and speaking of winter. It was 30 degrees last night here in Orlando, y'all. 30.

I brushed my locs!

Okay...before I get started with this post, I don't want y'all to think I came up with the "brushing of the locs" idea. Several loc'ers do this and I just happen to be another one that is jumping on the bandwagon.

While I have found brushing my locs and scalp to be a heavenly experience, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Especially to those who are super anal about the lines in their scalps. Considering I'm a part-time freeformer who could care less about straight lines, brushing works GREAT for me. Although I've heard about the concept for awhile, I don't know what inspired me to actually purchase a brush. I was roaming around in Sally Beauty Supply one day and just scooped one up.

Speaking of brushes - do you know it's been over THREE years since I've felt one on my head? That's a long time yo. Long long time. That said, I forgot how wonderful a soft bristled brush can feel. Lawd. It's like heaven, y'all. Heaven. When I purchased said brush I made sure it wasn't too rough 'n tough. I didn't want to risk my locs snagging.

After washing the locs one morning, I brushed the scalp and gently brushed some locs.

It felt divine. It felt like a much needed scalp massage. So much so that I didn't want to stop. Brushing is the bomb dot com. Fo reals.

Pro's
-It feels amaziiiiiing on the scalp.
-It's a nice little treat for your locs.

Con's
-Can damage baby locs or those with looser textures. I wouldn't even consider this idea until your locs have completely matured.
-May disrupt loc lines on scalp.

I'm not sure what the benefits are brushing the locs. It's really the scalp that I like to focus on. I usually like to spray a bit of water on my scalp before brushing and get to it.

So yeah. That's that, y'all. Have you ever brushed your locs? Or would you?

How adorable!

I'm not even going to front, y'all. I played with Barbie dolls up until I was in 6th grade. My sister was 5 years younger than me and while I ended up giving her all of my Babies, I would still get down on the floor and play with her. Aaaaand of course there were not any natural hair Barbies back then. I actually own one that does have an afro and I am so excited to see more hit the scene.

She's so fly, ain't she? Huffington Post reported that you can actually re-create the curly fro hairstyle by following this tutorial. If I'm lazy enough I just may sit down one afternoon and curl my straight-haired graduation Barbie's hair. A reader sent me an email saying that even though I'm not blogging as often anymore, she would love to see other loc rockers highlighted on the site. What a fantastic idea! The innanets are full of beautiful photos of loc rockers and I would love to highlight the ones that I come across. In addition to featuring some of you, I will also be doing my own searching and posting pictures of beautiful loc rockers; men, women, adults, kids, anyone....

Feel free to shoot me your photos or some of the photos that you've come across. Keep in mind that I will only post pictures if I can source it properly. If there isn't a watermark, link to the loc rocker's page, blog, website or profile, then I won't post it. Gotta give credit where credit is do.

Long hair DO care

The other day I posted the above picture on the Loc Rocker Facebook page and said that I was just itchin' to cut my locs off.

Folx went off and told me not to do it. I'm so dramatic. As annoying as these longer locs are, I doubt I would cut them all off. I never vowed to wear locs for the rest of my life, but I'm really not ready to cut them. But I'd be lyin' if I said having longer locs is fun.

Because it ain't. I SO miss my shorter locs. I really do. As a newbie loc'er, I spent a lot of time desiring and admiring longer locs. I couldn't WAIT until I got there. Now that I'm here, I feel like I should revisit the shorter locs.

Is that a bit insane or what? I know. I'm nuts. Truthfully though, I've never been a long hair lover. Some women are head over heels in love with loooooong hair and really, it does nothing for me. It's shorter hair that I find is chic, memorable and funky. Okay and let's face it - shorter hair always makes me look slimmer in the face. Yes, it's a vain illusion but I feel like my cheekbones do some serious poppin' when my hair is up. But when it's down....*yawn*

I'm not in the mood to do curls because I've been doing some sweaty workouts so the curls will just die in sweat. And as far as coloring, believe it or not, I'm not in the mood for that either. I hate that I'm in such a funk with my locs when tomorrow they celebrate THREE years.

Maybe I'll be a good blogger and actually do a video and take some pictures. Yep. I think I will.

Any other loc'ers going through that "My hair is longer but it's boring me" phase?

Hiiii! I know. I totally dropped off of the face of the e-planet. Just on the Loc Rocker side though. My other blog Clumps of Mascara is still alive and swinging. Every few months I go through this "thing" where I stop finding inspiration to blog about my locs. And it's not because I don't like them but...I run out of things to say. Unlike a lot of loose naturals, I don't "play" in my hair much. I wash it, twist it (or not) and leave it alone. Sometimes I'll throw a style up but nothing that I thing warrants a formal post.

I find that I'm not the only loc blogger that has this "disappearance" problem. A lot of us just stop blogging because well...what else is there to say? I hope to grab onto some inspiration in the new year. My goal is to revamp Loc Rocker and make the navigation easier. That way, whether I blog daily, weekly, or monthly, if you're looking for a product review, or pictures of how my locs looked when they were 4 months old, you will be able to find it. Easily. I will also have contributing writers that are open to blogging about their experiences, styles, products, etc.

But who knows what could happen. I'm a dreamer and visionary and Loc Rocker can only get better. I won't let the site die but at the same time, I just don't see myself blogging regularly on it. But I am open to suggestions and ideas. I would love to let you know what I think.

I WILL definitely be blogging about my 3rd year anniversary which will be coming up in a few weeks.

Okay, ATL...if you didn't know about it, there is a HUGE natural hair event that Mae from NaturalChica.com and Mimi from MimiJOnline.com will be hosting. Considering it's a a beauty AND natural hair fusion, I am just a little more than jealous that I can't attend.

Buuuut, I'll be there in spirit. The planning team asked me to represent for the loc rockers in their promo video and I was happy to oblige.

Natural Connections-October 2011

So yes, yours truly was one of the hosts for the inaugural Natural Connections event. I was contacted by the wonderful T.Gaines of T.Gaines Entertainment. Apparently he heard from others that I was the IT GIRL for natural hair in Orlando. Uh...I don't know 'bout all of that but I was honored that he asked me to be a part of what appeared to be a great idea.

How was Natural Connections going to differ from other natural hair events? Our vision was to have an event that combined a classy Girl's Night Out with an educational and interactive forum surrounding natural hair. I've been to several natural hair expos, meetups and educational seminars but never something as classy and fun as Natural Connections. And I'm not just saying that because I was a part of it. ;)

The event was held at Tavern on the Lake, a nice restaurant/night lounge here in Orlando. Vendors were selected and placed on the perimeter of the lounge. That way, no matter where you started circling the room, you were close to a vendor. Vendors included natural hair stylists (including my girl LaTonya at Estah Locs and my other girl Jill at Jill's Natural Hair Studio), jewelry designers, t-shirt businesses, natural hair products and Cake in the City, a fabulous brown owned bakery.

Each vendor at the opportunity to address the crowd and talk about their salons and businesses.

Hair hairstylists were showing off some of their work.

From there, guests networked, chit-chatted with each other, enjoyed bangin' music, devoured delicious cupcakes and enjoyed drinks at the bar.

Within an hour into the event, Ms. LaTonya and I acted as moderators for the Question and Answer segment.

That was hard for me. I much prefer to be behind the scenes. Am I good at public speaking? Sure. But do I like it? Uh...no. Especially not when wearing heels. A little known B fact is that I absolutely HATE wearing heels. The entire time I stood up there, questions kept plaguing my mind.

Do these bright lights make me look fat? Can anyone else notice that my overactive sweat glands are hard at work? How do I stand? My nose itches, should I scratch it? Can anyone else see that I'm wearing Spanx? How many calories are in those cupcakes? Am I talking too quickly? Why does my voice sound so whiny?

Y'all, my head was NOT in the game. But I pulled it off nonetheless and could not be happier to run off that stage and give it back to our comedic host, Devery.

Afterwards, I spent my time taking pictures and hanging out with friends I hadn't seen in awhile.

And meeting new ones.

And showing off the adorableness that is my mentee and bragging about my friend's fascinators.

I thought Natural Connections was extremely successful and I can't wait to link with T.Gaines Ent to do another one. My guess is that we had a good 200+ in the house. My numbers could be off, but we had a grand time!

Loc Style: Reina

I can't wait to revamp Loc Rocker. I'm ready to move on to WordPress and provide a secondary menu bar 'an everything. In a perfect blog world, on this secondary menu bar, I'd have a tab called "Styles".

In that tab, I'd list a ton of loc styles. Ones that I've done, submitted ones, styles for guys and styles for those with 2 month old locs to 10-year old locs.Ah yes...I can dream, can't I? Maybe we'll see a Loc Rocker revamp in 2012, uh?

Anywhoovers, the Natural Connections event was absolutely amazing. Thank you to those that came out and supported. I'll do a formal review of the event but I wanted to shoot y'all pics of my hair style that night. I wanted to take pics BEFORE I went out, but this was a good 4-hours after partyin'.

Yeah. It was definitely cuter and more put together before. I call this Reina, which in Spanish means "Queen". I'm not sure where I got the idea from. I was just staring in the mirror and it came to me. Or maybe I've seen it somewhere before. I don't know. Either way, I dug it.

Product Review: Uncle Funky's Daughter Rich & Funky Moisturizing Cleanser

Lately I've been in the play around with different products mood. Which is completely uncharacteristic of me. Despite being a beauty blogger, I am the opposite of a product junkie. I don't like to spend money on anything until I run out. However, that has been anything but the case with shampoos. I've been on the hunt to find some new and great ones!

First up is this guy...

This isn't my first run-in with Uncle Funky's Daughter. I've tried their Glossy before and have visited their super crowded booth each time I visited the World Natural Hair show. I've always had my eyes on their shampoo and when I was offered the opportunity to give it a whirl, I couldn't turn it down.Simply put, this shampoo is the bomb diggity! I usually have to wash with two kinds of shampoos. A clarifying shampoo and a moisturizing shampoo.

While some may argue that using a clarifying shampoo each wash may not be a good idea, my locs beg to differ. While I love how clarifying shampoos REALLY cleanse my scalp and locs, they usually leave my hair brittle and dry. That was the main reason why I stopped using castile soap. Rich & Funky Moisturizing Cleanser does a phenomenal job at putting that moisture back in my hair. Which, by the way, is a MUST for folx with color treated hair.

The shampoo has a light fragrance and lathers up nicely. Like everything from the Uncle Funky's Daughter line, it is free of parabens and sulfates.

It's a winner and is on my list for shampoo's that I love. I do, however, wish that UFD was sold in stores internationally. Unless you can find a salon that sells it or you manage to scoop it up from trade shows, your best bet is getting it online for $15.50 for an 8 oz bottle. Oh...and that's another thing. I so wish that the bottles were in larger sizes. An 8 oz bottle of shampoo may last 3 shampoos tops.

Orlando Natural Hair Event: Natural Connections mixer

Yours truly has been working alongside a very talented event planner to bring about a unique natural hair event.

Natural Connections has the education and excitement of an expo with the setting and vibe of a grown and sexy-type joint. I'm super excited about this! I know if you all could attend, you would but if you have any natural lady (and guy) friends in the Orlando area, please oh please send them this info.

Also, if you are a natural hair blogger, editor or vlogger and would like to be placed on the VIP list, let me know.

Y'all pray for me. I'll be MC'ing for this event. And I don't even know how to do such a thing. Luckily, I'll be MC'ing alongside my loctician! I haven't seen her since January so I need to make sure the locs look extra nice so she doesn't shoot me any side-eye's. I want her to know that I am taking good care of the locs that she started off almost 3 years ago.

Sooooo, I colored my hair again! Weeeee! It's been a few months since I've done some color. I think the last time I did a dye job was in April. That's almost 6 months ago. Wowsers!

So yeah...it was time.

I battled between doing it myself and going to my loctician but honestly, y'all...I save SO much money doing my own hair. And yeah, a loctician can do it better but whatev...I'm not that bad. Despite not distributing the color as well as I would have liked to, I still think this is by far the best color job I've done. My hair was left ridiculously soft and the color took better than I expected.

Here's what I used...
I went to Sally's and scooped up the following:
-Clairol's Permanente Deep Conditioning color in 8RN (light red-neutral brown)
-A hair dye brush for mixing and application
-Clairol's Developer in 40
-Proclaim Neutralizing Shampoo
-Clairol's Jazzing Sheer Hair color in Racing Wine
-Gloves
-Plastic shower cap

I spent less than $30 on everything. The entire process, however, took a good 2 hours. Don't think that this is something that you can do in an hour or so. You really need to take your time. In fact, I wish I would have taken MORE time when it came to application. Because I didn't, a few of my roots didn't get the color. Is is noticeable? Only if you're realllly up in my scalp. It doesn't bug me too much but I know that if I would have invested a few more minutes, I would have gotten everything.

Although that bleaching experience scarred me, I am kinda grateful for it. Because my hair is so light at the top, I can deposit color without any problem. Eventually the bleached locs will grow out but for now, I kinda dig 'em.

I did equal parts of the color and developer. I kinda just plopped it all over but I wish I would have been more meticulous with distribution. Kept the color on for a good 40 minutes, rinsed it out and washed with neutralizing shampoo a good 7-8 times.

The biggest hair crime you could ever make would be not rinsing all of the hair dye out. This is especially crucial for us loc rockers. Trapped hair dye can continue coloring/eating away the loc and you're left with damaged locs that eventually pop up off. And yep...I know this from experience. After 7-8 shampoos and rinsing, my locs were super crunchy. I've been testing (and loving) Uncle Funky's Daughter Rich and Funky moisturizing shampoo and used that to put some moisture back in the locs. This is one dynamic shampoo for color treated hair. It left my locs so soft that I didn't even feel the need to follow up with a conditioner. Also, I've been washing my locs with cold water. A veteran loc rocker told me to give this a try and my locs feel 10x softer than when I wash them with warm water. I followed up with Jane Carter's Leave-In Conditioner. Theeeeen I retwisted the roots without product, sat under the dryer for 30 minutes with heat and 10 minutes on cool and was done!

See how I've got one spot that's super brown and the other areas near my edges aren't AS brown? Poor color distribution. I'll do better the next time I color. I just had to DO something because the dark roots were driving me nuts. Oh! And as far as the faded pink locs...I only did that to a few of them. I always require some kind of pop and that Racing Wine gave me just that. I want to re-dye those locs again as I don't think I left the the dye in as long as I should have. The color should have taken a little better. I digs 'em nonetheless.

I've come along way with my dye jobs. I've learned a lot. Oh another note...I think I'm going to go back to semi-freeforming. I miss the afro roots. A lot. There was something special about these...

I want them back. Back they will come.

Have you ever used shea butter on your locs or WOULD

you use shea butter on your locs?

My answer: Triple no. My locs takes any kind of thick butters and creamy conditioners and turn them into build-up. When it comes to moisture, I stick to water, light oils and leave-in conditioners.

Loc Spotlight: Guy loc rocker-Jermaine McGhee

If there's one thing us loc rockin' ladies love, it's a loc rockin' fella. I had the honor of interviewing Jermaine McGhee. Hit the jump to learn more about him and how he maintains his beautiful locs.

Jermaine McGhee is professional football player and aspiring model, originally from Oakland, CA. He graduated from Prairie View University, where he majored in Criminal Justice and was the 2007 MVP, two time first team All-American, Male Athlete of the year, and ranked best in the nation in defensive sacks for his sportsmanship as a college football player. He was the first player from Prairie View to head to the NFL in over 30 years. He has played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008, and the Buffalo Bills from 2009-2010, but following an injury and surgery has returned to football as a free agent.

McGhee is an extremely positive and optimistic person and describes himself as a loving family man, husband, father, brother, and friend. He started his journey with locs seven years ago, though it took two years before his hair completely loc'd. Since then, he states, he loves his locs and he's not going to cut them anytime soon. With a dazzling personality and striking good looks, he's bound to win hearts as both a passionate football player and as a heart stopping model.

1. The ladies of LocRocker.com are head over in heels in love with guys with locs. Do you feel as if women noticed you more because of your locs?

-Well, I'm 6'3", 258 pounds, tall, dark and handsome, hahaha. I always had long hair. I had braids then I got my locs and that opened up another door to another group of women, so yeah they notice me more with my locs. I'm their dream man to those who love a guy with locs.

2. Because you travel so much do you maintain your locs on your own or do you have a loctician?

-Yes, I maintain them my self. It's easy.

3. You mentioned that you are never going to cut your locs. What do they represent to you? Just a hairstyle or something more?

-My locs represent to me. It's culture. Every race can't get locs. I mean they do, but it's not the same process, and it does not have the same meaning for them to have them as it does to us as in black culture.

-First, your locs are gonna look different than other peoples. Then, be clean and hygienic and again be patient. Lastly, love your locs, brotha's.

-A must have product is perfect shampoo and perfect oil or moisturizer. I'm still trying out different brands to find the perfect pair.

A style I call "The Ms. Olabisi"

While they say kids don't really "remember" life until they are older, I beg to differ. I remember quite a bit from when I was 4 and 5 years old. When I was 4, I went to this daycare on the campus of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. I had a teacher there named Ms. Olabisi. She wore locs down her back. She had an amazing spirit and taught us African songs and dances. How I remember all of this is beyond me, but honestly...I don't think I could make it up. I did a style that I think I remember Ms. Olabisi used to wear.

It's nothing fancy, really. I'm sure MANY loc rockers have pulled some locs together and tied them in a knot. But why I am just now discovering this style is beyond me. It is extremely practical and SO easy to do.

Have I ever told y'all how HARD it is to take a picture of the back of the back of your head? Lawd....
There is really no purpose behind this post. Just a quick style and memory. I can't really explain it but discovering this style brought about some kind of awakening. I started remembering all kinds of details about going to Pre-K. I remembered the African songs, some of my playmates and the names of other teachers. Craziness.

Y'all don't think I'm nuts, do you? Be honest. ;) Oh! And I'll do a formal feature on it but I will be hosting and MC'ing a natural hair event here in Orlando. Should be lots and lots of fun. Even if you can't attend, let your Central Florida ladies know about it.

Some tidbits about Nefertite:

-Nefertite Nguvu is a graduate of New York’s School of Visual Arts, where she obtained a B.F.A in Film.

- She has written, produced, and directed two short films: a uniquely stylized black and white romance entitled “I Want You,” in 2007, and “The End of Winter,” an emotional meditation on loss in 2009, both of which screened at numerous film festivals.

-Most recently, Nefertite directed a ten-part web series entitled "The Road to U.N.I.T.Y" which chronicles the life of five aspiring female emcees hand picked by, and featuring Queen Latifah for CoverGirl and Flavor Unit Entertainment.

-She is currently partnered with Queen Latifah’s production company, Flavor Unit Entertainment to continue to produce, develop and direct inspired content.

-Nefertite is in pre-production for her first feature film entitled “In The Morning,” scheduled to begin shooting this November. With her company Hollywood Africans LLC, Nefertite plans to continue to create exceptional projects that defy stereotypes and usher in a new school of thought in the entertainment industry.

Loc Style: Angola + why thick locs rock

I named this look after Miss. Universe 2011. After the freeform challenge, I jumped back in with retwisting but haven't done much styling. My goal was to visit my wonderful loctician and have her deep clean the locs and take care of the few locs in the back that are full of build-up. Buuuut, simply put...I can't afford it right now. Ha!

Not that being broke is funny but one must laugh to keep from crying. My financial roller coaster is the main reason why I opted to be the primary do-er of my locs. While I wanted to have a professional if I wanted, needed or could afford some pampering, I always wanted to feel confident that I could do my hair if need be. I never felt that way when I was a permin'. But anyway...

I've got a wedding to attend this weekend and wanted to look jazzy.

At the same time, I've been working out like a mad woman and didn't want to have a style that wouldn't hold up through sweaty workouts. I decided to do crinkly curls but instead of taking the braids out a day or so after I've worn them, I decided to keep them in all week. I did a bun for a few days but got a little bored with that. And so I played around a bit and came up with something a bit different. Not bad, eh?

I got the adorable bow from Quelly Rue Designs and it probably doesn't match with anything that I have on but it's uh...color blocking. Yeah. Color blocking.

Being able to do this style is also a reminder that thicker locs rock in so many ways. I've got about 16 of those braids (maybe less) and still managed to crank out a look using 2 bobby pins and 2 twist ties. I always hear loc'ers saying things like "I opted for smaller locs because I wanted to have styling options." I laugh because who said you can't have styling options with larger and thicker locs? Just sayin'...

Because these braids have been in for close to a week, I'm sure I'll have super tight curls. I'm going to do a cute wedding-y up-do with them. Yippie!!

Oh...and sorry about the watermarks. I loathe them tremendously but folx be stealin' my pics and not crediting them. And not just Tumblr people. I mean major websites.... Not.cool. So from here on out, I'll be watermarking most, if not all of my photos. Womp.

How long does it take you to wash your locs?

I don't know if I'm being extra slow or if it should really take THIS long to wash my locs.Yesterday it took me almost an HOUR to thoroughly wash these 2 years and 9 month old locs. Here's what I did:

-Rinsed the locs with water
-Applied a clarifying shampoo
-Rinsed
-Applied more clarifying shampoo combined with baking soda. Scrubbed problem locs and edges.
-Rinsed
-Applied moisturizing shampoo
-Rinsed

Loc Spotlight: Paula's locs celebrate 2 years!

I know. I am an absolute horrible loc rockin' natural hair blogger. Just wretched, I know. But enough about me and my e-ghostness when it comes to blogging. I should have featured the lovely Paula months ago (you know, like in June) but I totally forgot. I have updated her stats from when she first sent them to me but check out her beautiful locs.

June 7th, my locs turned 2 years old. I only use oil. No butters, creams or waxes. I use Pure by The Natural You which is my line.

I shampoo once weekly and deep cleanse using my liquid black soap bi-weekly. I condition with every shampoo and I do a conditioning rinse at least once a week or when I feel necessary( mostly when its hot and in Florida and that's all the time).

Since starting my locs I combined almost everyone of them by interlocking completely down the loc. I hate the 2 headed dragons. I started coloring my hair after my first year and I have been hooked every since. I do this now about once every 3 months or more and only to my roots.

I use the latching or interlocking method to maintain my locs and I have since decided to only latch every 6 months.

Since 2008, I have been on a natural high. Locing my hair was a natural progression (no pun intended...sike!!!). I always wanted to loc but as a stylist of 20 years I didn't know how my clientel would take as I had no plans to become a natural stylist at that time.

In 2009, I felt it was all about me being the best me I could inside and out, so here I am. Now I won't say because I am natural that everyone should be or if you are not something is wrong with you, I am just the opposite. I believe that natural beauty comes from within, and how I wear my hair has nothing to do with my beauty. I'm just as beautiful with a mane of locs or a bald head:)

I love my locs I love how they feel between my fingers I touch them constantly. I love my hair. Nothing more nothing less.....

Freeform Summer Challenge: Check-In #2

In a few days I would have gone 2 months of not twisting my hair. Considering I'm rocking fully fledged afrolocs, I am SO excited about this. I will definitely be doing this next summer and as needed. I mean, it makes perfect sense. Why be so anal about twisting my roots in the summer time with all of the sweating and swimming I do? It's just so pointless. That and well....I really really like my freeform locs.

As much, if not more than my manicured locs.

Quite frankly, I don't notice much of a difference between my first check-in and now.

The roots are still super thick with afro goodness. I found myself playing in my roots quite often. It brings back a bit of nostalgia of when I was a loose natural. Not that I miss that. If you knew me then, you knew that I was the laziest "hair do-er" ever. I love that freeforming has allowed me to get back to that "lazy stage" of natural hair. Not that my maintained locs required A LOT of time. But there were days when I didn't work out after a retwist. And there were moments where if even a bit of afro hair was showing on the edges, I was grabbing some aloe vera gel and retwisting it.

If you're going through that "I want a new look with my freeform locs", try curling them or braiding them. I washed my locs, braided them, took them out the next day and had gorgeous curls. Yes, I've done this before but they looked beautiful with the afro roots.

My girl Shana and I were talking about heading on over to Track 3 buuuuuut I'm not sure. I'm anxious to get over to my loctician and have her really treat my scalp and locs. I need a good hair detox, a scalp massage and I need her to remove some of the build-up from the locs in the back. I just feel like my locs need some pampering. Oh! And those blue locs come from Milani Cosmetics' hair mascara. I was shocked that it worked on my locs. It's a temporary hair tint that I wore for a weekend. Y'all know I'm a rockstar. Blue locs? Right on!

They've had a great summer. Freeforming has opened my eyes up and given me such a greater appreciation for my locs. For the first time ever, The Guy said he likes my freeform locs better. Now don't get me wrong---I don't need approval from anyone. But hearing something like that from your significant isn't a bad thing, uh?

Downfalls about freeforming? I don't think I had any. I enjoyed washing once a week and air drying. I didn't get any build-up. Not one bit. My roots did get a bit tangled after each wash and pulling them apart wasn't the best feeling in the world. It wasn't AWFUL either. I'll be revisiting freeforming again. Maybe in a few months. Maybe next year. I love not setting rules and making plans for and around my hair. I just go with the flow.

Where are my ladies and gents participating in the Challenge? I know some of you have completed, some are struggling, some are doing well...let us know! I'm not posting the participants this go 'round as I don't want to shame some of y'all that have dropped out of the challenge. And that's cool. The challenge wasn't about "winning" or "losing" but it was an attempt to try out something different with our locs. Freeforming isn't for everyone. But honey...I am 100% down with the freeforming lifestyle.

Do you really love your locs?

This post is moreso my jotting down things that I need to be telling myself so bear with me here, okay? I know of a few ladies who also deal with with this and that inspired me to write a post about it.

What am I talking about, you ask?

I'm talking about people complimenting your locs and you responding with a "not so nice" comment. I know I can't be the only one that does this...

Yes. Yours truly, natural hair blogger and editor downplays her hair. I didn't even realize that I did it until a friend of mine brought it to my attention.

"Yo B," she says. "Every time I compliment your locs, you come back with some negative crap about it. What's with that? Don't you love your hair?"

Because I HATE to be wrong, I was thisclose to telling her off. But after giving it some thought I realized that...she's right. Every time someone says something nice about my hair, I usually follow back with one of the following:

-"Girl, it's getting too long and hot."
-"Pshhht, I need to wash it."
-"I'll probably cut it soon. It's just SO hot."
-"They're hot, man. "
"This length is not the business."
"Man, I hate that they're so hot."

Did you notice that 80% of the responses are of me complaining about how hot my hair is? True enough....this is the longest my hair has been in years and Florida's heat and humidity makes having longer long a bit unpleasant.

And it's not as if I don't know how to accept a compliment, because I do. I am not a woman that doesn't know her beauty. I do. I love receiving compliments as much as I love to dish them out. So why then do I have such a hard time accepting a compliment about my locs?

The short answer is I don't know. I can't say why I feel this way. A lot of love has gone into installing and growing my locs. My locs have enlightened me. My locs have inspired others. I really really love my locs. I'm quite attached to them. I've got to do a better job at receiving compliments. Being surrounded by positive energy is very important. Just how can I expect my locs to flourish if I'm talking so badly about them.

That changes. I will speak and think only positive thoughts about my locs. I encourage y'all to do the same. Even if you're 7-month old locs still don't look the way you want them too. Even if your 3-month old buds are fuzzier than you like. Speak positivity to your crown. And accept positivity too.

Q&A: Session 5

So sorry for the ghostness, y'all. With Loc Rocker's older sister being hacked (a blogger's worst nightmare) and Blogger giving me mega problems when it comes to putting a post up (Blogger sucks royally), I've been a bit behind. We haven't done one of these in a while and I figured since I've been getting some interesting and similar questions these days, I figured it was time for another Q&A Session

Q: How do I ________ my Sisterlocks?

A: I get very many questions about Sisterlocks and interlocks. However, because I am a traditional loc rocker, I never feel confident enough to give out advice to ladies and gents whose loc'ing methods are so different from mine. That said I can't tell you a thing about Sisterlocks. But I can lead you to better resources. One comes from my girl Dewdrop. ;)

Q: Did you ever clear up your dry scalp issue?

A: Oh you remember my complaints about the dry scalp, uh? The good news is---I'm not having that problem too much anymore. I think it has something to do with the weather. I think most peoples' scalps tend to be a little drier in the cooler months. I also wash my locs a lot more (every week) so the scalp really never has time to get super dry. So yeah...it's gone for now but I think a dry scalp is a chronic issue for me. No worries, I'll have my Head and Shoulders 2-in-1 on deck when it's time. ;)

Q: I love your freeform challenge idea and want to completely start freeforming my 16 month old locks. How do you think I should start the process?

A: OMG, don't even get me started on freeforming. It has been one of the best experiences ever. I see what people mean about having some kind of spiritual connection with their locs. I developed an insane amount of self-love and self-acceptance when I stopped twisting my locs to an inch of their lives and just let them....be. Fuzzy afro-roots and all. It's a beautiful thing. But you see, my darling...there is NO process. There isn't a schedule or a guide or road map. You just...let go. While it sounds simple, I guarantee you it may not be easy in the beginning. Especially if you're a "I've got to see my scalp" kind of loc'er. You may feel unattractive and "unprofessional". I know I did. But give it some days, weeks and months. Discover an authentic and unmaintained side of beauty. The side of beauty that says, "Yeah, I've got locs and they don't have to super manicured to be beautiful." Some permies say they can't go natural because they don't see the beauty in natural hair and my belief is that some of us naturals have a similar mentality. We can't freeform because Whoa, that's just way too "Rasta" looking. Or too "free". I hate to admit it but I thought that way once. I'm rambling now but I am quite passionate about freeforming. It's the greatest gift I've given to my locs and to myself. You'll enjoy the journey. I promise.

Q: B, wtf is the deal with castile soap? My dreadlocks used to love it and now it doesn't work as well. i haven't seen you talk about it in a while. do you use it still?

A: Nope! Sure don't. My locs are not a fan of castile soap either. I used it A LOT back in the day but now I find it to be extremely drying on my color treated hair. That and I really don't dig that super clean streak-y feeling that castile soap gives. It's just...not pleasant. It left my locs really crunching. I now use more moisturizing shampoos and follow up with leave-in conditioners. My locs are a lot happier now that I've dumped castile soap. Remember I wrote that Letter to Castile soap? Yeah...that was pretty much around the time when I stopped using it.

Q: I can't seem to find the best product to retwist my locs with. I've used everything and can't seem to get that hold that I want. What do you think I should do?

A: Okay soooo, define HOLD for me. Are you looking to achieve some kind of liquid metal spritz type hold? The type of hold that us former permies would get at the hair salon after sitting under the dryer for 50 years? Nah...can't say I've ever come across a product that can give THAT kind of hold. But why do you feel as if you need a hold like that? Are your locs struggling to stay twisted? If so, welcome to palmrolling. This method of locs means that even if you spent hours retwisting your new growth, there is always a chance that they may unravel. Especially when water, humidity and sweat is involved. I've heard of loc rockers using brown gels and have received a good hold. I'm an aloe vera gel (will soon be retwisting with just water) girl myself so I can't say I've tried many products for retwisting.

Q: Don't think I'm crazy but next month I'm getting locks and I am really nervous about what my boyfriend will think. You dont talk much about your guy but how does he feel about your locs?

A: You're right....I don't talk much about my guy (lovingly named "The Guy") online. Sure I'll talk about my dry scalp, crazy menstrual cycle and adult acne all willy nilly. But when it comes to my relationship, I find it better to keep it offline. The Guy and I have been dating for a little under a year so I had the locs when we met. He is not one of those fellas who are head over heels in love with natural hair. Nor was he ever questioning if I was going to perm it. Quite frankly, I don't think he cares one way or the other. For a lot of guys, it really is JUST hair. They could give two craps about how it looks. And no, I don't think you're crazy. You definitely want to be attractive to your significant other. But if having locs is what YOU want, do it for you and only you. If you're a little weary about his reaction, show him blogs and videos about loc'ing. Explain to him that it's a process and that there may be times when you look a little loca. Ask him what he thinks. But whatever you do, don't let his thoughts influence how you feel about your beautiful hair and beautiful self.

Then again, being that I'm in my first relationship after being chronically single for um....years, I may not be the BEST person to be delivering relationship advice. HAAA!!!

Product Review: Peter Lamas' Chinese Herbs Stimulating Shampoo

It's been a hot lil' minute since I've done a product review on Loc Rocker, uh? Product junkie-ism tends to die with locs because locs really don't require too much product. Less is more and outside of a good shampoo, oil, conditioner (if you use it) and loc'ing agent (if you use it), what else do we need?

But I want to keep you guys up on the shampoos that I run into. Every now in then, I think it's okay to try something new. That said, you already know the obsession I have with Peter Lamas' Purifying Shampoo. I had the opportunity to test drive his Chinese Herbs Stimulating Shampoo...

I received samples of the shampoo, conditioner, mist and styling cream, but my locs are so particular. The only product that I could use was the shampoo.

Per the website,

"The Peter Lamas Chinese Herbs Stimulating Shampoo is a therapeutic, special-care formula empowered with Chinese herbs that have been used for centuries to stimulate and energize weak hair and scalp. This product gently removes hair follicle-blocking sebum and debris that can slow growth or cause premature hair loss. Mild and gentle, this extraordinary formula won't irritate, strip away color or dehydrate hair or scalp. Helps alleviate dandruff and itchiness."

Sounds good enough, uh? I wanted to give it a good 2-3 uses but I used the entire bottle in only one wash. My hair needs a loooot of shampoo to really get a good cleansin'.

Like the Purifying Shampoo, this one smells absolutely divine. It suds up nicely and feels good on my scalp. It looks like a traditional shampoo but of course, it's all natural.

It didn't leave my hair super stripp-y but I didn't love it as much as I love the Purifying Shampoo. It retails at $22 which is a little on the steep side. Keep in mind that Peter Lamas is an all-natural, vegan and cruelty-free brand. You'll always get what you pay for and the Chinese Herbs Stimulating Shampoo is no different. If you can locate it in her natural food/heath store, I'd definitely give it a try. You can scoop it up online too.

Fascinators anyone?

One of my greatest friends here in Orlando is Christine. She's a hardworking nurse by day and jewelry maker by night. I didn't know about her hidden talent of making fascinators until a few months ago.

Don't judge me but I didn't even know what a fascinator until last year. Fascinators are intricate hair accessories. They come in various styles, colors and shapes. They include feathers, nets, buttons, bows and whatever trinkets the designer may dream up.

Chris makes stunning fascinators for women of all hair types. I'll be doing a full feature of some of them soon but wanted to show y'all a few that she had on her when we recently got together for lunch. I happened to have my camera on me and started snappin' away.

Kim Coles' Natural Hair Journey (video)

Y'all already know how much I love Kim Coles. I posted about her here and here. She's back with another video of her transitioning to rocking her beautiful natural hair. I don't know if it was the music (that song was dope) or what but I got a wee bit emotional. I love how she has embraced, supported and shouted out the natural hair community. Has this ever been done before by a celebrity? Maybe. Not on this level.

And that's not a bad thing. In 2 days, it will make a good month of no retwisting. I've gone a month without retwisting before....hence why I wanted a challenge and opted for Track 2. But still, in the times when I didn't retwist in a whole month, I didn't wash the locs either. I've washed twice. Which has been such a treat for my locs.

I've had such a hard time getting the build-up out of those 3 locs. I'm leaving those to my loctician. I think I'm going to have her treat the locs to their first retwist after the challenge. Speaking of build-up, I'm thinking that my Organics Root Stimulator Loc & Twist gel may be contributing to it. Since I haven't been retwisting, I haven't been using it AND haven't gotten any build-up.

That means when I start retwisting again....I'm going to try it with just water. Or at the very least, just aloe vera gel. Nothing more. The biggest struggle I have with these freeform locs is separating them after a wash.

Some tend to bind together and I'm left having to snatch them apart. Which is painful and damaging to my locs and scalp. But uh...I know of no other way to separate them. And separating them is a must.

Overall, I'm loving the look of these locs. I love how they look. I love how they feel. It's a different look for me. So different that a friend whom I haven't seen in months saw me and said, "Wow B...really lettin' those locs go there, uh?" She didn't mean to be rude. But I get what she's saying. I look completely different with freeform locs and manicured locs. Not better. Just different.

Hey there fellow Loc Rockers! My name is Tamara and I am mighty. I am an expert music lover and concert goer turned novice runner. I imagined myself with locs long before my first hair appointment. They represented so much for me, and about our people. Locs were compelling for both their beauty and resistance to European beauty standards. I loved all locs in their variations (thin, thick, free form, or super manicured). Unfortunately as a newbie natural I was "not ready" for locs. After my big chop in 2006 I wore some variation of fros, twists, braids, and twistouts. By late 2010, I had enough! I was tired of admiring other beautiful sisters and brothers with locs.

In January my loc envy got so bad that I spent all night searching the Internet for salon recommendations and tips for newbies. Finally I found Knotty Roots Natural Care Studio. This salon was everything I needed. During our consultation the owner Mizan carefully answered all 50-11 of my questions about loc installation, maintenance, products, and general natural haircare. A few days and $90 later I had my comb coils. She event sent me home with a packet and free handmade hair concoctions.

To date my baby locs have been a source of pride. As a new runner (ahem!), locs make it easy to get up and go. I'm super excited to continue this new journey. Before I know it my locs will be long, mature locs, a reflection of the care, time, and money I put into them. Right now, I'll settle on more loc envy -- (B., Chescalocs, Iroclocs, and fyeahdreadlocks I'm looking at you!)

Locs Installation-- January 6, 2011
Method-- comb coils at Knotty Roots Natural Hair Care Studio in Bayonne, NJ
Regimen-- mostly DIY - wash when my hair when I get the urge, relieve the itchies with Peppermint Oil spritzer and moisturize with Hair Sprouter oil (both sold at Knotty Roots)
Condition-- Suave naturals, Carols Daughter Tui hair smoothie mixed with water, or LUSH American Cream conditioner.
Retwist-- once a month.

I am absolutely loving NOT retwisting my hair. And I thought I'd never say that. Not doing so has really given me a greater appreciation for my locs. I was never the kind that needed super manicured locs allll the time, but I did like how freshly twisted locs looked over locs that weren't twisted.

I can proudly say that at this point, I am actually digging the freeform locs more.

Granted freeformed locs come with their own set of challenges (will talk about those later) but for right now, I am in LOVE with them. I'll do a formal post on Friday checking in on all of the guys and gals participating in the challenge but for now I wanted to shoot over some random pics of my edges and super afrolocs.

Freeform Summer Challenge: Quick 'n Easy Style

Soooo the Freeform Summer Challenge is in full swing and from the emails and comments on the Facebook wall, some of my gals (and guys) are struggling. Especially those of us that are used to super manicured locs where we HAVE to see the parts in our hair. I'm learning to just go with the flow of the 3 inches of afro hair I have at my roots.

I washed my locs and found an insane amount of build-up (I'll save that for another post). I did some running outside and let them air dry. They were dry in no time considering it was 101 degrees that day in Florida. While I was getting ready for work the next day, I started playing around and came up with a quick style that I think will work best for those ladies who are too afraid to wear their locs wild 'n free.

And please excuse that blurry photo. I had the wrong lens on my camera. The photo snob that is me should know better. *scoffs*
I pulled out a piece of fabric string yarn hair tie thing and tied it the locs up in a ponytail.

The only difference between this and a traditional ponytail is that I pulled the fabric string yarn hair tie thing around my head.

Of course this will only work with medium to longer locs. And I'm sure I didn't invent the style but it was a nice and casual look. I want to buy some more fabric string yarn hair ties in different colors and patterns.

So glad that I am finally getting the opportunity to feature a Sisterlock'er. Check out Katisha's story....

I've had a fro....I've had faux traditional locs....I've had another fro...then twists that I thought would turn into locs. Then I cut those out, and....had another fro. I was in a "ho-hum" phase with my hair in 2009. I knew I didn't want to cut it again, and go through the process of growing ut a TWA. Trust me, I was caYUTE in it (lol), but I was at a point in my life where I just didn't want to do that again.

After stalking somewhere upwards of a million websites (okay, okay, I exaggerate, but it was a LOT! LOL) and doing some soul searching, I settled on Sisterlocks because of the versatility I'd seen in the pictures, and they *seemed* to behave more like loose hair; thought I'd have the best of both worlds.

Then I went to a Sisterlocks consultation. I hated it! She seemed very unsure of herself, very intimidated by the amount of hair I had, the "training" video was dated and played out, and it hurt when she put in the tester locks! As if! I was very disappointed because I was back to not knowing what on EARTH I was going to do with my hair. I decided to go to one more consultation before I just gave up. And I'm so glad I did! I loved her over the phone, and even more so in person. I had such a good time at the consultation that I didn't even want to leave her house. She became family (and in fact does my mother's hair now!). About 3 weeks later, it took two women 22 hours over 2 days to install my locks.

I wish I could say I was in love from the gate. But my very first thought was "ooooh, wee! What have I done?!" LOL. Only because I felt it was so permanent and....well...it wasn't cheap!

I'd say about a good week or so into it, I was a different person. I didn't love having to band my hair before I washed it, having to separate the locks after a wash and all that, but after that? Gravy.

I'm 2 years into it now, and like with any hair style, I've had my ups and downs with it. Sometimes, despite their versatility, I miss having loose hair. I haven't loved each phase they've gone through. I'm still not all the way locked and the puffy, not locked ends get on my very last nerve sometimes. But....overall? I'm very pleased. I don't know that I will keep them forever/ Don't know what I'll do next, but....right now? I'm good.

Orange locs in the wind...

Every now and then I like to dress my kids alike.

Y'all do know I refer to my blogs as kids, right? Ha!! Clumps of Mascara had this photo posted over there and I'm posting the same photo over here.

It looks like my red locs (you know, from that rinse I did) have turned orange. I am absolutely in love with them. I want more orange locs! This was a shot of the locs after a few hours of boogie boarding. Surprisingly, my hair didn't get THAT wet. I had a few wet spots in the back but nothing that warranted a full wash. Then again, I'd say anything to get out of washing my locs.

In random news, I want to take up surfing this summer. Won't that be cool? I'll be a loc rockin' surfer chick. And then I'll start a blog called BlackGirlsSurf.com. Nah, I'm kidding. I've got enough blogs. :)

Freeform Summer Challenge. You in?

The official Freeform Summer Challenge is here, y'all!!! Yaaaaay!

This idea came about from some of the guys and gals in the LocRocker Facebook group. If you're interested in dropping the obsession of perfectly manicured locs and desirous of giving your scalp a break, then let's go!

Purpose of Freeform Summer Challenge
I'll admit it. I have Chronic Retwisting Syndrome. It comes and goes, but there are times when I will retwist the new growth (even when I don't really NEED to) simply because I feel like I need to look 'cute'. While it may be okay now, over-twisting can lead to breakage, popping and a receding hairline. The Freeform Summer Challenge will give us the opportunity to just let go, let our locs do their own thing and realize that we DON'T have to have perfectly manicured locs to look and feel beautiful.

Who's Eligible?
Whoever wants to be. Remember, you know your locs better than anyone else. If going a month or more without maintenance may bother your locs, you may want to sit this one out. If going months at a time without retwisting is NOT a problem for you, then this won't be much of a challenge for you, would it? The best candidate is the loc'er who can admit that he or she may retwist too frequently or wants to give the locs a break and try something new.
[NOTE] This Challenge may NOT be for everyone. If you are a newbie loc'er, interlock'er or so worried about extreme fuzzies that you fear you may go crazy, consult with a loctician or trust your own judgments before jumping in on the challenge.

What if I already freeform?
Great! We'll need you around to help motivate those of us that may need it. Any tips and suggestions you can provide will be much appreciated.

When does the Challenge start and end?
It's up to you. The idea is start after June and before October. However, it's completely up to you. Recall the last time you retwisted your new growth and that can be your start date. We have decided to do THREE tracks.

Track 1: Freeform for 1 month
Track 2: Freeform for 2 months
Track 3: Freeform for 3 months

Ex: If you decide to do Track 2 and start on June 11th, your end date would August 11th.

What can I do and NOT do during the Challenge?
Feel free to style your hair like you normally would. Washing is allowed (and encouraged) and the only DON'T is to refrain from retwisting and interlocking your roots. That's it.

What if I decide to drop out of the challenge?
No problem. No one will know but you. However, I have committed to taking Track 2 and I know y'all will hold me accountable. Dropping out ain't an option for me.

Each week a FreeForm Summer Challenge Update post will go up on LocRocker. In that post, feel free to comment with updates on your locs and any feelings you have about freeforming. I will also post submitted photos (Brittany@LocRocker.com) from readers as well as pictures of my locs.

My first attempt at bantu knots + Freeform Summer

Why didn't y'all tell me bantu knots were so fabulous? Despite them feeling like I was sleeping on a bed of rocks, I absolutely LOVED this 'do.

The good news is that my locs did a great job at twisting over into the knots. I only had to use 3 rubberbands.

The bad news is that this style made my scalp soooo sore. My scalp pretending to be tender-headed is not cool. At all. Why this happens is beyond me. I used to be able to endure all kinds of hair styles without dealing with pain. Now it seems like MOST styles not only leave my scalp feeling sore but result in head aches. What gives, yo?

It's a simple style that doesn't take forever to do. I retwisted the roots, grabbed 3 and kept rollin' and rollin' and tucked the ends at the base of the knot. Easy peasy. I sat under the dryer for a good 20 minutes or so and then went to sleep with 'em and wore them the next day. Bantu knots confuses people. A few of my coworkers didn't know WHAT to say to me. I had to do the "It's a popular African hairstyle" bit. Then I got the whole "Oh man, I wish I had hair like that." thing. Just WHAT do you say to comments like that? Hmm...

In other news, I am doing the "Freeform summer challenge". This is a challenge I made up and talked about doing on the Facebook page. I won't be retwisting all summer long. This will be hard for me because while I can do weeks without doing a thing to the locs in the back, I really love a fresh retwist when I'm stylin' and profilin' on the first row of locs. *sigh* Details about freeform summer challenge coming soon! Product Review: LiQWD Hydrating Shampoo

I got the opportunity to test drive a shampoo from a brand that you may or may not have heard from. It's a luxe brand of hair products that you can get from select salons and online.

When it comes to shampoos, I can be rather picky. Although I prefer to use lightly scented clear shampoos that have clear consistencies, I don't mind trying products outside of my comfort zone. LiQWD's Hydrating Shampoo promises to not only maintain color deposits through the hair (thanks to the L-Tyrosine) but it also contains apple extract that helps to soothe and soften the hair. I've tried a ton of shampoos and have never had apple extract in any of them. Pretty groovy, uh?

Ingredients-wise, I could have done without the sulfates. Mainly because I find that they make my hair a little on the stiff side. Occasional use of products with sulfates in them don't bother me but I try not to make a habit out of it. Since this shampoo seemed to be so geared towards strengthening color-treated hair, I didn't mind giving it a chance.

It's a super thick shampoo so a little bit goes a looooong way.

Which, I like. I have to wash my hair three times. It takes a lot of shampoo to do the job so I liked that this one lathered well and rinsed clean.

Results? It left the hair super clean! I didn't get that super strip-y feeling I get when I use some shampoos so that's a good sign. I wasn't big on the fragrance but I think that's because my nose just really appreciates woodsy/earthy fragrances over 'traditional shampoo' smells.

Still. It's a shampoo that I'd recommend to a loc rocker. It's a bit on the pricey side retailing at $28 for a 350ml bottle but some of us don't mind investing pennies on our crowns.

One of my favorite loc rockin' guys (hey Brandon!) and I were tweeting the other day and he was telling me how he ran into a loctician that offered her services to him. The problem? Her locs were a hot mess.

One of the reasons why I selected LaTonya as my loctician is because of how gorgeous HER locs looked. Although I had already made the decision to loc up, checkin' out her gorgeous and healthy lookin' locs only reconfirmed my decision. If she can take care of her locs like that, I KNOW she'll take care of mine.

McGriff's Original Lockgroomer: Would you use heat to maintain your locs?

A ton of love to my sis Sabrina who left this on the Loc Rocker facebook page.

I'm not gonna lie...that's a pretty groovy tool for those who are desirous of manicured locs. And while I'm no heat snob (I sho 'nuff sit under a dryer when using perm rods and pipe cleaners), I think that's a little TOO much heat for my liking. And he lost me at "waxy oil". While some loc rockers can use wax on their locs, I can NOT. So no, I'm not a candidate to this type of maintenance, but I think it's a great addition for those who love super groomed locs.

As much as they used to bother me, I can't imagine totally eliminating the fuzzies. And the Lockgroomer looks like it does just that.

I started my locs March 25, 2011 and did the big chop in December of 2010. I'm excited about my journey and I'm ready for any and everything. I did all my research before locking.

I been wanting them since 2007 but was scared of what others thought. It's been the best decision I've made! I felt tied down by perms and weaves every month. People expected a different hairdo from me and I am not my hair. I am free!

Guest Post: Why I Decided to Comb Out My Dreads

Today's post comes from a college friend of mine, Simone. She was always one of my favorite loc rockers and when I saw that she chopped the locs, I was like, "Wow! Gorgeous!" I wanted to get her hair story to share with the Loc Rocker family. A lot of us may not understand why loc rockers suddenly chop their hair, and while it makes complete sense to me, Simone's view may provide some perspective.

Why I decided to comb out my dreads

I started dreads about 1 year after going natural. After all of the initial unfavorable criticism, people fell in love with my dreads as they grew, and I did too. I remember when I used to stare at other women with long dreads wondering if and when I’ll ever reach those lengths and I did! I got what I thought that I wanted…Long, healthy, gorgeous dreads. Unfortunately while others grew more in love with them, I slowly fell out of love with them. I think the switch flipped in my brain one morning when I was washing my hair in the shower and realized how tired my poor arms were getting. By this point I was about 4 ½ years into my loc journey. My dreads became a chore to me. They were HEAVY. I had a headache because they were heavy. They took too long to wash. A once-a-week wash wasn’t sufficient anymore. They started getting caught on my purse. I would accidentally lay on them. I had to put them up every day for nursing school, which was not my style. I was too tired to curl them because I was tired from washing them. The list goes on. I got dreads because there were convenient and this was NOT feeling convenient.

My months of thoughts about getting a loc haircut turned into the idea of combing them out, and I decided to make that idea reality. Why not? I could now enjoy all of the wonderful natural hair care products on the market. I could learn to care for and enjoy loose natural hair. Most importantly, I could master the feeling that I am someone beyond my hair, and it is ok to have hair change. Every other race of women enjoy the freedom of growing, colouring, and cutting their hair because it’s just hair so why not me? Why not any black woman?

I thought that I would always have dreads. I became living proof that black women can have long hair. In fact, I took pleasure in telling other women and men “yes they are real.” I became motivation for other women who were either newbies or were thinking of going natural. I’ll admit that I was also a bit flattered by the attention (superficial I know). Other people loved them and I felt guilty for not wanting long dreads anymore, but at the end of the day, you have to be the one to love your hair and yourself. NO hairstyle, even dreads, is meant to last forever in my life. People will ask you “why cut them when you’ll probably get dreads again?” That is perfectly ok. The idea that dreads are forever is outdated. After over 5 years, I closed the chapter of my 1^st set of locs. Grow your hair, cut it, grow it again, and be confident about it. Just keep it natural.

My experience with combing out my dreads

I sat down in front of my laptop with a jar of hair cholesterol, a fine tooth comb, a mirror, a mini garbage bag, and a fork (Yes a dinner fork) and literally went to work. I watched youtube videos to pass time and keep my sanity. After 2 1/2 weeks of tediousness, impatience, discomfort, bad hair days, and almost giving up, I cut/combed out my dreads.

I had to cut them to help with the process because there was just no way that I would have been able to complete this within a somewhat reasonable period of time. Besides, the price tag on doing this professionally was seriously enough to buy a car. Although I wanted to give up, I am now very pleased and I’m enjoying the joys of caring for loose natural kinky whatever-you-want-to-call-it hair. I feel free, confident, and motivating.

I haven’t seen this but may I suggest a transition process? I’m thinking you could grow your dreads out for about 6 months, keep combing the roots, and then cut them. Maybe that is easier said than done lol. If you are considering combing out your dreads, let me give a few tips:

· Count how many dreads you have. This way you can make a goal for how many dreads you can undo each day.

· Get a good condition with a lot of slip. I wasn’t a huge fan of the hair cholesterol I used.

· Get a spray bottle of water instead of dipping your hair in water. This will save you from making a mess.

· Don’t be scared to cut them to make it easier on yourself. After undoing the 1^st one I grabbed the scissors.

· Finally, braid your hair as you undo them instead of twisting. This way, your hair will not try to lock itself back. Funny how you master something after you complete it and never ever want to do it again.

Texture shots...

Aside from writing, blogging, traveling, social media, techy stuffs beauty and natural hair (whew), one of my other loves is photography. I recently added another camera to my line-up (hey Nikki!) and found that on a certain setting, this DSLR takes phenomenal texture shots of the locs. It's reallllly hard to capture texture shots. It took some time, but I finally got some great ones. These pictures show the kinky, bumpy, dyed wonder that are my locs.

Imperfect but beautiful. Just like me. And you. ;)

The World Natural Hair Show 2011

So yes, I went to the World Natural Hair show for the second time and let's just say...it was an interesting experience. And I don't mean BAD. After all, I drove and road 6.5 hours up in a fly Expedition with 4 of my friends.

It was a much needed girls weekend out and hangin' out with such an amazing group of women was definitely the highlight of the trip.

This year's show (like last year's) was crowded and full of attendees. The show was held at the Atlanta Convention Center.

It's a great venue as there is plenty of parking with clean restrooms and lots of walkable space. The problem with this year was that there just wasn't enough space INSIDE the expo. The line to get into the show was awful. Horrible. Horrendous.

Mind you, this is the view OUTSIDE of the show. We stood in line for over an hour. Signage and volunteers were hard to locate. No one knew where Will Call was or where a line started or ended. I ended up giving my $10 entry fee to a gal with a Ziplock bag. And she gave me wristband. But no receipt. Which makes me wonder how they were tracking their purchases. Not that it's any of my business, but still...

Once inside, you could barely visit vendors because crowds and crowds of folx would be in the way. Walking was difficult and it was hard to find the vendor that you were looking for.

Which brings me to another point. The official event brochure should have had a legend or map that indicated where each vendor was. It took me almost an hour to locate the Huetiful booth. And speaking of vendors...there were too many of the SAME kind. I came across several brothas sellin' oils. Don't get me wrong, I love supporting Black owned business, but come on...FIVE brothas selling similar products are just space wasters. Perhaps the show's committee should be a little more selective about their vendors. I also saw someone selling knockoff MAC Cosmetics products. Okay...really? But aside from that, I enjoyed running into my fellow natural friends and bloggers.

There were also THREE stages of acts and shows. But with no barriers to separate the noise, it was hard to hear much of anything. The girls and I ended up leaving within 2.5 hours. The crowd continued to grow, vendors were running out of products and our feet had just had enough. As we exited, that horrific line was still alllll the way down the hall. A friend of mine told me her sister stood in line for an hour before she left. Had I not traveled 6.5 hours to come to this show, I would have left too.

Will I go again next year?
Of course. But I hope by then that the show has a press room. As a blogger and writer, I depend on press rooms when I attend huge shows. They give me the opportunity to find a quiet place to interview brands and they give me wifi and seating to do some live blogging/tweeting. Press rooms are an integral part of expos and shows as they benefit not only brands (who get coverage) but also writers (who appeal to their audiences). Not having a press room does a disservice to press. And from a PR perspective, you WANT to appeal to press as they are the ones helping you advertise.

I am glad that show is growing and I hope that with their growth, some changes are made to ensure that visitors have a pleasant experience. I attend several industry (natural hair and beauty) events and so my expectation are a little high. My job when I go to these shows isn't to just buy a ton of products and goo goo ga ga over hairstyles (although I do that too, lol). I go to network with natural hair care brands, products and fellow editors. And because of the crazy amount of people that were there this year, I didn't feel like I got a chance to do that.

I'm a business woman first and natural hair enthusiast second so I wasn't very happy that I didn't get to do much business-wise at the show.

It wasn't a complete loss though. I had a great time with the gals and meeting some of you wonderful readers.

Natural Hair Expo in Houston, Texas!

I've never been to Texas. Which is crazy because I've been to over 20 states in the U.S. of A. And Texas isn't one of them. Had the funds been rollin' a little bit better, I'd be headed over there for this event. It's going to be huge!

Huetiful Hair Steamer for locs

It's a shame that I'm just now realizing that I have NOT done a review for the Huetiful hair steamer for LocRocker. I posted the review on Clumps of Mascara but totally forgot to share it with my uh...HAIR blog. Is this what having 2 kids is like? You forget to pay attention to one from time to time?

I jest, I jest. My Mom had two kids and showed both of us (especially me...her favorite, lol) plenty of attention.

So here it is...the Huetiful hair steamer review for locs. As of May 10, 2011, this is the most complete and thorough review of this steamer for loc'd hair. *pops collar* Just thought you'd like to know that.

Call me loca but I've never heard of a hair steamer until I saw natural hair bloggers posting about Huetiful's.

Now let's set this straight, doll babies. I only know what works for my hair type. And my hair type is pretty specific. I am brown girl with loc'd hair. My review will be based on my kind of hair only. Can the Huetiful work on other hair types? I wouldn't doubt it but I've only seen reviews of it by women of color with relaxed and natural hair.

For starters, what's the point of a hair steamer and why would anyone need to use it?

The Huetiful was designed specifically for curly and wavy hair. Its claims are what drove me to act like a giddy 5-year old in anticipation until it found its way in my house. It claims to reduce dandruff, help open up hair cuticles to allow conditioner to moisturize inner layers of the hair shaft and enhances hair dyeing and pigmentation process. As a sista who suffers from dandruff, could use more moisture in my locs AND colors my hair frequently, I found myself to be a great candidate for the steamer.

It was actually very easy to put together.

Even for a I'm too lazy to read directions so this better work kinda gal like myself. It only comes with 3 parts (the facial attachment makes 4). What makes Huetiful stand apart from other hair steamers in the ozone feature; which, helps kill the bacteria that can lead to dandruff. Once you press the Ozone flip UP, the steam turns into ozone and does its magic My scalp thanks you, Huetiful.

Pretty cool, uh? I added a few drops of peppermint and rosemary essential oils in my water for a therapeutic effect which made for a pleasant 20 minutes of sitting under the steamer.

Honestly...my scalp has become spoiled and craves the streamer every few weeks. My dandruff doesn't seem to flare up AS much and my locs feel softer. Which, you know, says a lot since locs are usually hard. With having colored over 5 times, I could use every extra bit of moisture that I can get.

And we won't even get on the facial attachment.

I mean, although it took me 10 minutes to figure it out (it wasn't in the directions...boo!) my sinuses and pores absolutely loved it!

Is the Huetiful Hair Steamer a must have for women with locs?

It runs for $114 so it's definitely a luxury buy. One, that I think a lot of us loc'd ladies will find only enhances our at-home hair care regimens. Especially those of us with dandruff. Because it doesn't show immediate results, I think with prolonged use, it will keep my dandruff at bay. Or at least under control. And although I don't use creamy conditioners (currently playing around with leave-in homemade ones and Infusium 23), I find that allowing the condish to sink into my locs after a good steam makes all of the difference in terms of super soft locs.

I don't recommend the Huetiful with ladies and gents whose locs are in their infancy. Especially if you are a loc rocker who started off with comb coils. The steam may prematurely unravel your locs and although your scalp will feel rejuvenated, you may be a little unhappy at the afro which were once baby locs. Waiting until your locs can handle regular hair washings without unraveling is your best.

Yeah mon.

I hope Huetiful works diligently with trying to work out international orders. I can just hear a silent hiss from my UK and Canadian readers. Yes loves, you won't be able to get your hands on the Huetiful. Not yet but they are working on it.

Mop Top Maven gives a dynamic review of how to assemble the steamer. I think it works wonders on the curl/kinky hair girls of the world and I am proud to say that yes, it works on locs too!

Stop obsessing over them.

Seriously. The minute you take away that focus, the locs will just take off. It's kinda like gaining weight, ya know? You don't realize how round you've gotten until you see yourself in a picture and then you're like, "Crap! Is that me?"

Umm, bad example...but y'all know what you mean. I had a mini photo shoot with the locs this weekend and got some dynamite texture shots. I'll be postin' those soon.

Product Review: Uncle Funky's Daughter Glossy

I've covered this brand before. They were a big hit at the World Natural Hair show in 2010 and they were an even bigger hit at this year's show. While some vendors have tables set up to display their products and goods, UFD had a pop-up shop. Very cool.

While they do have soooome products that appeal to me, the majority of their line seems to be geared towards those with curly hair. Products like Curly Magic, Super Curl and Thirsty Curls are products that I probably wouldn't be attracted to if I was rockin' loose natural hair. My hair is anything but curly and I am one of those gals that could care less about curl definition and the like.

But they've got creamy conditioners, shampoos and styling products that virtually any one with any hair type can use. They really get an A+ from me because they nix the bad and keep the good when it comes to product ingredients.

Take for example this High-Gloss Mist. It is without parabens, alcohol and mineral oil. It includes jojoba oil, sweet almond oil and coconut oil. I'm lovin' that it's lightweight. I use it every other day or so on the locs and it doesn't feel greasy or oily.

The fragrance is nice and mellow and doesn't linger. Which is great because lingering scents send me straight to Migraine Mountain. An 8 oz. spray bottle will run you $22 which may seem like a steep purchase but it'll last you forever. I took mine on my road trip to Atlanta and all 5 of us natural ladies used it for days and it barely made a dent in the bottle. It's good stuff. Definitely a worthwhile purchase for my loc rockers lookin' to try some products from Uncle Funky's Daughter. We all know that locs don't shine or look "glossy" but this is good to have for added sheen. Not Charlie Sheen (hahahaa, I crack myself up) but it'll give the locs that "My locs don't look dull" look.

Has anyone tried any of their products? I want to try the Moisturizing Cleanser next!

'Scuse me, but uh...you think these locs grew overnight? Nooope. And I've got an entire blog of pictures to prove that they didn't. When they were this itty bitty, I didn't think they would ever grow. Funny what some time and patience will do though.

Guest Post: DIY newbie loc'er

After contemplating for the past 7 years, I finally decided to get locs and I've had no regrets. I am a DIYer and I enjoy figuring out my hair's likes and dislikes. The beginning of my journey was a little frustrating as my twists will unravel during washing but its all worth it since my locs are forming and I'm seeing beautiful results.

Locs Installation-- Nov 16th 2010
Method-- finger coils and palmroll
Regimen-- wash when my hair tells me to which is normally once a wk
Condition-- used to condition with coconut milk, coconut oil n honey but lately I've been using my old faithful, Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner and my locs are thanking me for it.

Retwist-- usually twice a month.

Here are a few things I've learned so far:

~Listen to your hair.
~Don't let others discourage you.
~PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE.
~Find loc blogs (I was happy to find so many loc blogs)
~Everything is not for everyone. Some products that worked for others may not work for you
~Do your research (youtube, blogs, forums, books, experiment)
~Wash your hair
~Less is sometimes better.

I'm currently using only two products on my hair at the moment.
In the beginning I used JML and ORS gels to twist but they both made my scalp itchy and made my hair dry and crunchy. I've also used aloe vera n honey which did keep the hold but I didn't like idea after the first try so now I don't twist with any products and that's been working out perfectly for me. I simply spray my locs with a concoction containing a few drops of rosemary oil, water, honey and evoo and then I add a quarter sized amt of Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade (love it).

As a newbie loc'er, at times I felt discouraged due to lack of style options and others opinions but I'm quickly that this is MY journey so I'm embracing and loving every minute of it!

The Truth Behind Bleaching Your Hair

My coming across this video could not have come at a greater time. I've been getting a TON of emails from loc rockin' ladies who are interested in dyeing their locs for the first time. My first suggestion is to ALWAYS consult with a professional. Even though I've done dye jobs at home, a GOOD colorist can do 10x of a better job than we can.

And secondly, I always tell folx to be very weary about bleaching their hair. I've done it to a few locs and will NEVER do it again. At least not at home. After a cosmetology friend explained to me what happens when we bleach our hair, I've been a little weary about wanting to risk the health of my hair by doing it. This sucks as I LOVE playing around with hair color but bleaching? Even I have to take a step back from that.

What's your take on bleaching the locs?

Guest Post: From permin' at 6 to rockin' 4 month old locs

Sheryl and I go back to the playground as kids. Not really but it feels like it. She is beyond awesome and wonderful and I am so honored to call her a friend. Peep her awesome locs...

I never in a million years thought that I would loc my hair.

I had a perm since the age of six (yes gasp now). I’ve never known what it was like to not have a relaxer. I was one the one to always be outside early in the morning on Saturday (rain, sleet, or snow) faithfully waiting for that wash and set. I didn’t think I had “good hair”. As soon as I got a perm I was counting down until the next one.

I can’t remember the exact moment that locing my hair crossed my mind.

However after being subjected to chemical burns and the inability to do the activities that I liked because I didn’t want to sweat my fresh wash and set out, I knew that I needed a change. When I began to grow out my perm I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with my hair but I knew relaxing was not an option. I remember seeing Brittany’s hair and other locd ladies at the Makeup Show in NYC and at that point I KNEW that my journey would begin.

I started my loc’s on November 18, 2010. Prior to that I had been growing out my relaxer (my last relaxer was on January 8, 2010). I remember sitting in the chair and the loctician just cutting off the rest of my permed ends. I never understood what some ladies meant when they said they felt free after their relaxed hair was cut but at that moment I instantly knew what they meant. Since locing my hair I maintain it on my own. I’ve only been to the loctician one time and that was to get them started. I told myself that I didn’t want to have to depend on others to do my hair (as I had to with relaxing).

I can say that I’m 250% in love with my hair. Locs are so versatile. I will admit when I first came home with them I was not in love, in fact I was very self conscious. I remember taking a pic of them and sending them to Brittany and she said they looked great (Brittany were you trying not to hurt my feelings? LOL). I just decided to roll with it and four months later they are blossoming.

My routine is pretty simple. I wash every two weeks (faithfully). I don’t retwist often maybe once a month but no earlier then three weeks. I latch occasionally but for the summer I think I’m going to stick with just twisting. As far as products I use store brands like Jamaican Mango and Lime, Queen Helene hot oil treatment, and Suave shampoo. I like to keep it simple since I feel that’s what having locs is all about.

I would say to anyone considering locs to decide if this is what you really want. Locs don’t develop over night and it requires time and patience. I honestly wish I would have locd my hair years ago. I’ve discovered self confidence that I never thought I had. You have to remember not to compare your locs to someone else’s, your hair will have its own personality and it will be BEAUTIFUL!!!

I accidentally colored my hair. Again.

Well, not really. I didn't WANT to color them. Well, that's a lie too. I DID want to color them but knew I shouldn't. But there's something about summer-like weather that makes me feel like I should go lighter. Dark brown hair is just...I don't know. Expected and boring on me.

I took it easy and only lightened up the front half of my hair. It's minimal but I am loving the difference! Goes perfect with the beach tan. Haaaayyyy!!

And I don't even know why I spent the time retwisting and curling my locs knowing good and well I'll be back at the beach this weekend for some boogie boarding and body surfing.

Oh wells. I suppose they'll look good for 6 days or so. I also want to do something extra funky for the World Natural Hair show. Clearly adding more color isn't an option but I want a super awesome and unique style. Hmm....I'm thinking of spray painting a few locs vibrant purple and pink. You know....with some non-toxic hair color spray. I'm also thinking about getting my nose pierced for the THIRD time and getting a hoop. I am obviously tapping into my inner-rocker girl.

And in random news, it's been a whole SIX years since I've been perm-free. That's kinda awesome considering I was insanely depended on the creamy crack.

Loc Challenge: Trapped build-up and lint

If you haven't seen any posts from me about loc challenges that's because for awhile, I didn't have any. It seems like the more my locs mature, the less issues I have. I've gotten over and pruned the frizziness. The scalp is chronically dry but I kinda just deal with it. And the locs grow without any issues.

BUT---I have come across a problem that had me in the mirror for hours.

Trapped build-up and lint.

This is bad. This is very bad...

My loctician told me many horror stories about veteran loc'ers who had to CUT off their locs because of trapped build-up and lint. It can be quite a problem. Especially if you don't tackle it immediately.

'Hole up, B. How do I prevent this from happening?

Everyone's locs are different and but for me, the best way to prevent this is to stay far away from hair butters and creamy conditioners and to wear a satin bonnet to bed. There is no way around this. I don't even lounge on the sofa without covering my hair.

How to get rid rid of build-up or lint?

First you have to identify which is which. And here's my little trick. If when you wet your loc, the white stuff disappears, it's build-up. If it sticks around and is still noticeable, it's lint. Removing lint is relatively easy. Tweezing it out may take some time but once it's out---it's out, build-up on the other hand is a whole 'nother demon. One that I find can be removed by one of the following steps:

1) Cutting the loc off. Not an option for those of us who are new to locs and don't want to chop them yet but veteran loc'ers may not mind chopping off a few inches to get themselves of the linty locs.

2) Dyeing the locs. The dye can totally cover up the build-up and lint.

3) Performing surgery on the locs. This is my method of choice. Here's what I do. First...more lovely pictures of the build-up trapped in my locs.

I used a creamy conditioner a few months ago. Just to SEE if I would have build-up issues. And I did. And I thought I washed it all out. But I had 2 locs that that kept the conditioner trapped inside of their loc'd up selves. And because I hardly look at the back of my head, I didn't notice. Which brings me to another lesson, purchase a mirror and get in the habit of looking at the locs in the back.

I took tweezers and removed as much of the build-up as I could. It's hard to get it ALL because it is not only outside of the loc but inside as well.

If you're good you can get quite a bit. You'll loose some hair with it alas there is a sacrifice to everything. I am STILL working on removing the build-up from these locs. I do a little bit a day. I plan to scrub them with baking soda and castile soap to remove what I couldn't get out with the tweezers.

Anyone else with trapped build-up and lint issues?

How old are my locs: They are 2 years old as of March 2011.

How the locs came about: Well, this is actually my 2^nd set(wore them from 2000-2005) I wore my hair super short from 05-09, and I loved it, but my husband asked me to grow my locs back-so I did. I actually missed them anyway-I would look at photos of myself before I cut them and I would kinda miss them.

My favorite products: I’ve loved Organic Root Stimulator Lock and Twist gel for years. Sometimes beeswax gets a bad rep, but I personally like it-I use a tiny amount mixed with my loc gel. I learned years ago not to use a lot of beeswax in my hair (and I will NEVER use the black beeswax again EVER-who ever thought of that anyway??) I recently used Eco gel mixed with a little Murray’s loc-gel to retwist and I liked it. I shampoo with mane and tail shampoo, deep condition with Dr. Miracle’s deep conditioning hair conditioner(love the tingle!)then I use my apple cider vinegar rinse with a few drops of essential oil in it to cut the stink! (spearmint or lemongrass) and I use olive oil mixed with the wonder 6 oil as my hot oil treatment. As for leave in conditioner, I use the Sally’s generic brand of Infusium 23 leave in. I’ve tried more expensive products, but uh…yea basically I can’t afford em!

What I love about my locs: everything! Well…I didn’t love going thru the beginning stages…we had a love/hate relationship for the first…oh…YEAR! J I had my first set of locs in my 20s and for some reason, I don’t remember them being so…defiant-back then. Bantu knots and roller sets got me thru the “funky times”. That, and I finally just said “hell with it-do y’alls thang” and rolled with em. If they stood up, I just let em. I also free form for a few months at a time to let my roots stay strong. (my OCD makes me want to twist in my head all day yall!) I love to play with color, and I recently put honey blonde on my locs(which did NOT turn out honey blonde, as you can see) but I will be trying again (with a booster) in about 8 weeks. Im not afraid of color at all – I keep a bottle of semi permanent color on hand just in case!

Struggles I’ve had with my locs: I recently (12/15/10)lost my best friend of nearly 30 years to ovarian cancer, and I was THIIIIS CLOSE to chopping them all off after she passed. I don’t know, mourning I guess. But I went to my loctician(well I say my loctician, I’ve only gotten my locs done professionally about 3 times in all of the years I’ve worn them) –but anywho I went and got them cut into a bob. Short in the back, longer in the front. It gave me that “Release” I usually get from cutting my hair, mainly when I’m going thru something traumatic. I like the bob, but I am done cutting for now. The plan is to keep my locs til I turn 40----5 more years to go! We’ll see what happens!!

Afro locs rock the house

Don't get wrong, I am a proud palm roller. Palm rolling my hair has been the best and most effective method for my hair type and lifestyle. But quite frankly, some months I'm just over it. Especially since I'm hitting the beach a lot more frequently. Washing and re-twisting just to have to do the same thing a few weeks later is getting old.

And so afro locs I will have.

Some loc'ers really don't like to see a ton of new growth. They'd rather keep their locs super manicured. Others would prefer to sprout afro hair. I sit comfortably in the middle.

Sometimes I love the look of freshly twisted locs. And sometimes I dig the afro locs.

That's the cool thing about not using labels like "avid palm roller" or "latcher for life". You can freaking change your mind and not have to hear anyone's mouth about it.

Any afro loc lovers in the house?

Loc Spotlight: Ima's 4 year old locs

I started loc'ing 4 in a half yrs ago in 2006. Its been something that I wanted to do for quite some times but chosen to wait until I was fully ready. since I had them its been by far my favorite and the easiest hairstyle for me to deal with. As far as products I use for my loc's, I found the less I use the better, I like to make my own concoction usually.

I like to massage a mixture of avocado and olive oil to my scalp. Keeping it real simple seems to work best for my hair. I touch-up my loc's about once a month, I don't over-twist them which is the key to keeping it thick and strong allowing room for them to spread, breathe and express itself.

I love being natural because of how beautiful it looks and feels, and the freedom to be able to tolerate rain, humidity...just being in overall harmony with nature and myself. I love the bonding that I have with my hair, the ability to love, beautify and care for it myself. I love to let my locs express its own individuality.

REVIEW: Oyin Handmade Go Tea

I am a dedicated fan to the products that work and only switch them up after I've used the entire bottle. When I first read the description of Go Tea, I thought it would A LOT like the Juices & Berries and Greg Juice sprays. But nope, Go Tea has tea tree oil and jojoba oil. Right away I knew I wanted to use this as a scalp oil. The tea tree oil would keep the dandruff at bay and the jojoba oil would provide the moisture that my hair is constantly screaming for.

I like it! It's a nice refresher on my scalp but doesn't weigh the locs down either. I like to spritz it directly on the scalp and massage it in. I love that it isn't too oily. In fact, the consistency is a bit water-y. It doesn't have a strong fragrance as Juices & Berries and Greg Juice either. Which, for me...is a downfall because I love for my hair to smell...pretty.

BUT--this is a good thing for the fellas who will be using this to groom their beards. I like that the guys were considered in this product creation. $7.50 will get you a 4 oz. spray bottle which, I think, is reasonable.

The locs approve!! Purchase and get more deets about Go Tea here. I REALLY want to try the Hair Dew but my locs + creamy products=disaster so that's a no go. Any Oyin Handmade fans in the house?

Guest Post: Loc rockin' at 2 months

Hello Loc Rocker readers. My name is Courtney and I have been loc'ing for two months. While its only been two months it feels like forever! I say this because so many things has happened in this short time. By this I mean FRIZZ and I'm trying to keep it under control.

Welp, I learned early that this is impossible! I I have what I call the Alphalfa syndrome , locs sticking up everywhere! It has been LIBERATING to just let go. I came in a little reluctant because this process is brand new.After being a lurker on blogs I have gained this new confidence with my hair and I am sooo excited to see the future changes.

These photos are week after re twisting. Also walking in the rain and working out like a mad woman wont help the frizzyness. [ is it time to start latching??] Im learning to go with it as time goes on. I don't have a regimen in particular but I do religiously keep my scalp moisturized with my home made rosemary/ olive oil. Every Friday after cleaning my scalp with Organic Root stimulator cleanser, I warm up the oil and massage my scalp , wet a towel then microwave it for 2 mins and let it sit for 5 mins. [ soo relaxing] Im a DIY penny pitching kinda girl so I re twist myself using Organic root stimulator Gel and Shea butter.

I am looking forward to see more newbie loc'ers like myself here on Loc Rocker. I want to see more methods and encouragement from us.

Braided Locs, part II

I've been super lazy with my locs lately. But I don't mind it. I'm not "itching" to do anything and for a color fiend, I appreciate these moments of being satisfied with my locs. The other day I washed and braided them. I've done this before. This time, however, I decided to spruce it up by adding a flower.

'Scuse the blurriness. I've been rocking braided locs for several days now. This is the BEST style ever. Braids make for the best protective styles and last unbelievably long. In fact, unless I wash the locs, the crinkle-effect still goes on strong.

I tweaked my technique this go round and used rubber bands to bend over the end of the locs.

The last time I did this I had great crimps but straight ends. Not a good look. Let's see how long I can rock the braids for. I'm going to get my Nicey Nash on and rock a different flower every day. The braids HAVE to be up in some kind of ponytail. I mean, would y'all still love me if I wore them like this...

Negative. HA!!! People who see me with the braids always think that I've combed out my locs. I can see how. When braided, they don't look like locs at all. Pretty groovy, uh? What do y'all think? Any fans of the braided locs?

How to get rid of the bumps in your locs

A dear reader of mine posed this question to me. She wanted to know how to get rid of those bumps. What bumps you ask? Those.

Or maybe these...

Do you see them? Those little bumpy indents? You may or MAY NOT have them. But here's how you get rid of them...

You can't. No seriously, you can not. This is simply how your hair loc'd. For some, it may be a result from combining (that's me) and for others, it may be due to interlocking or starting the locs with 2-strand twists. Whatever the reason, learn how to embrace the bumps because they aren't going anywhere soon.

Locs will never be uniform. One will always look different than the other. And I think that's what makes them so beautiful. I love the little bumpy parts of my locs. It gives them character.

Any of you have bumpy locs? Do they bug you or not so much?

Hey there B,

I'm a guy and I follow your blog...when I can. Its so refreshing to see women who have embraced their natural beauty. The same way you are attracted to men with locs, I'm attracted to natural haired ladies. I think of relaxers as lethal injection for hair, and I believe any chemical that doesn't nourish hair should be banned. That's just me to each his/her own.

Anywho, I'm beginning my first set of locs pretty soon (been growing my hair out for the past 15 months, well more like 7...long story) and I've decided that for the next 3 months or so I'll tame the fro with some manageable braids. I've had them in now for about 2 weeks, and I have to say I'm lovin it. The attention I get from the ladies in the office is nice.

Just wanted to share this with you because I'd been a bit wishy washy about the idea of locing up, that is until I stumbled across your blog. You helped to reaffirm everything I'd been thinking. For me its more than just a hairstyle its our culture and those that disagree I think need a black history/African culture lesson. Anyway I'm running on now. Just wanted to say I appreciate your blog and to tell you keep it up sista and that you have males that read too lol. You energy is warm and positive and its a wonderful vibe.

I love when the guys show love. Thank you, Andrew! While us ladies can compliment each other on our crowns all day, it always feels good when a brotha can show us some love to. We thank you!!! Ladies, if your man, brother, nephew, son or friend are dealing with the decision to loc, let them know that they aren't alone.

Calling all newbie loc'ers!!

With my locs gettin' up in age, the last thing I want to do is feature styles that ONLY work on ladies with medium/longer length locs. I remember when I was doing my research on locs and would be so incredibly frustrated to see style photos and tips for the long haired folx but not for the baby loc'ers.

While I've documented my first year of locs down to the tee, I think readers will still benefit from regular updates from those of y'all that are new to locs. If you are interested in contributing to Loc Rocker or would like to be featured, please let me know! That includes personal friends of mine (ahem...Sheryl) and my regular emailin' gals (ahem...Shavonda). Don't be afraid to show of your gorgeous locs. 5 Questions to Ask A Prospective Loctician

Some of y'all have been stalking Loc Rocker but have not yet made the decision to loc your hair. And that's perfectly okay. The decision to loc should be made if and when you are ready. But if you are ready and you are in the process of seeking our a loctician, I've come up with a list of questions that I think you should print out and take with you during your initial consultations.

Don't give me that side eye. If you're going to trust someone with your crown, they owe you some explanations. You should not be embarrassed to ask these questions. After all, this is YOUR hair we're talking about. If a prospective loctician gets annoyed with your questions, guess what? You may want to find another one. So here we go...

1. How much is this going to cost me?

-This sounds like a simple question but it can make or break a lot. While loc installation may be a little pricer than regular maintenance, you may not want to shell out $50-$100 a month for maintenance. Don't be afraid to ask your loctician for prices. You will be in a happier position knowing that you don't have to sell your car just to get your hair did. Are you okay with spending X-amount of dollars on your hair each year? Yeah? Then rock on! No? Then find a more affordable loctician or prep yourself to be a DIY-er.

2. What products will you be using?
-Some of y'all are product snobs. You ONLY want to use all-natural everything or all-commercial everything. And that's okay when you are doing your own hair. But if you are trusting someone else to do your locs, you may have reservations about the things they will be using. It's okay to ask to see the bottles of the products that your loctician is using. Some may have an attitude about it but they'll get over it. If you DON'T like the products that your loctician is using, kindly ask him or her if they could use something else. If they refuse to, you may want to seek out a loctician that uses products that work well with your hair-type. Or ask if you can bring in your own products. Most locticians shouldn't mind at all.

3. Will anyone else in the salon be working on my hair?
-This is an important question to ask. Some of us REALLY like the person that has been doing our hair. We'd rather wait a few extra minutes for their availability than get passed along to the shampoo girl that scrubs your scalp a little TOO vigorously. Asking this question may put your loctician in a better situation to accommodate you during appointments. If you're lucky (like me), you'll go to a salon where all of the stylists are amazing. But if you know you are a Picky Patty about who handles your hair, ask this question before getting started.

4. Are you a certified colorist?
-Not all locticians are certified in hair dyeing. If you know that you'll be wanting hair color down the line, ask your loctician if she has certification. Most have it posted on the walls of the salon but if you don't see it, asking is not rude. Most stylists love showing off their credentials and will gladly share their areas of expertise. If you love your loctician and find out that she is not experienced in hair dyeing, then I suggest flying out to Indianapolis to visit Theirry Baptiste. I ain't playin' either. :)

5. May I see examples of your work?
-During the consultation a good loctician will show you photo albums of their work. This not only helps you realize that you're in good hands, but it also gives you an idea of what to expect. Locticians that document the journeys of their clients are extremely knowledgeable and can answer just about any question as it relates to locs.

Above all, NEVER be in the dark about what's going on with your hair. Not only are you paying for a service, but you are trusting someone with your hair. You should never leave unsatisfied or harbor a bunch of questions.

And of course it helps if you know how to do your own hair. While you may enjoy the luxury of having a loctician, there may come a time when you simply can't afford (*cough that's me *cough) one. Or your loctician may be unavailable or move. You don't want to be in a position where you are so dependent on someone else doing your own hair that you freak out if they can't do it.

Locs at the Beach. Is salt water a problem?

As most of y'all know, I am a native Floridian and a total beach babe. While life may transfer me to different states and countries, I have no doubt that I will retire at a location where the sun is always shinning and the palm trees are plentiful. That said, I'm not one of those brown girls that are fearful of the ocean. I've done everything from dive in the middle of the ocean at Turks & Caicos to banana boating in the Bahamas. I've water skied in Jamaica and snorkeled in Hawaii. And this past weekend I played at New Smyrna Beach.

As the weather gets warmer, I'm sure a lot of y'all will be taking trips to the beach. I've a few salt water swimming tips that I think will help newbie and veteran loc'ers alike. Remember...I ain't no professional. These are just tips that I have found works best for me and my locs. As always, consult with a loctician should you have any reservations.

1. If your locs can fit in a ponytail, put them up in a loose one. Wet hair is heavier and you don't want to pull on the edges any more than you have to.

2. For those with baby comb coils, be sure to consult with your loctician first before hitting the water. If you've washed your locs at least once before without any slippage, you should be okay. However, in their infancy, comb coils are prone to unraveling. Remember that and tread lightly. Check out the post of my locs at 6 months and the experiences I had with them while swimming.

3. Got color treated hair? The sun is no bueno for any of us. Spritz the locs with your favorite leave-in conditioner (you can make your own but diluting your favorite conditioner with water) prior to heading in the water. This helps protect the locs a bit. I also find that it keeps the hair softer as the salt water tends to dry them out. Use a liberal amount. Too much may result in build-up. And y'all know how I feel about build-up.

4. Don't plan on washing the hair immediately after leaving the beach? Be sure to rinse salt water out of the locs thoroughly. My hair is okay with not being washed right away but if feels a horribly crispy mess if I don't remove as much of the salt water as possible.

5. If you plan on air drying the hair, help it along by squeezing out excess hair using a microfiber towel. These soak up A LOT of water. But remember to get a darker colored one. White, pink, yellow and gray towels tend to leave lint in your locs.

Let me know if these tips are helpful. And happy traveling, darlings! I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend visiting one of Florida's fine beaches. Miami Beach is the perhaps the most beautiful (and populated) but don't forget the hidden treasures like Destin, Sarasota, Naples and Clearwater.

My locs when they were babies.

Although I'm not actively bloggin' on LocRoc (I know, I know...) I am still chit-chattin' with my favorite loc rockers via email and it turns out that many of you are coming up on major milestones! While y'all have been following my journey, I've been following yours and I am excited to see how beautiful everyone locs are!

So go ahead and rep your the age of you locs. Feel free to brag about their awesomeness as well. :)
