A Visit to the Loctician after a 6-month hiatus...

Well um, I can safely say I won't wait THAT long again before visiting my loctician. While I don't mind doing my locs by myself, I can't deny the love I have for getting my hair done professionally. I mean, we call professionals 'professional' for a reason. My loctician can wash, condition, twist and do my hair better than I can.

So I need to stop being cheap and go at least every 2 months. I recommend that everyone go as often as they can afford it. Remember all of those issues I had with deciding to latch? Or locs that were too skinny? Or trying to figure out how to color my hair purple? All could have been alleviated with a visit to the salon.

Ah well..you live and you learn.

Look closely...can you see? LOL, probably not. I went back to palm rolling. And there I will stay. Very soon I will do a post on why I went from palm rolling to latching and back to palm rolling.

Can you believe my loctician didn't have any issues with build-up when she washed my hair? Nope!!! Meanwhile back at the ranch, I get build-up EVERY time. When I told her I was doing an apple cider vinegar every time I washed, she gasped in horror.

And then she saw the purple loc and laughed. She said if I was desirous of wild colors like that she could get intertwine some type of silky yarn in the locs. I know someone is going to say, "I told you so." Yea yeahhhh, lol.

I told her I wanted to color again (surprise, surprise) and she told me that the next time I came in, that we could. Woo hooo!!

And then I decided that I wanted a style. I really wanted an updo because I know they are better for working out but I decided on something a little more casual.

The real question is WHY can't I do these styles by myself? Ah well... Next month I think I am going to go back to get some color and an up-do.

Lesson learned: Loc'ing is a journey. And along every journey, it is important to have guidance. My loctician was always great at that. But I stopped going to her and the minute I did....all of the problems started. What I thought I could handle myself via research/YouTube-ing and DIY projects turned out to bring me nothing but irritability, frustrations and locs with Y-roots.  So while I pride myself on being able to maintain the health of my hair, it ain't gon kill me to a professional help me out on this journey every now and then.

Girl you are looking good! I haven't been back to my loctitian in practically a year, mostly because i honestly can NOT afford to spend $60 every two months, but if I COULD, hell yes i would go back to her, but for me I really like doing my own hair. You are so right though, locking is a journey, and guidance never hurts, eventually i will go back to her but for now i'm gonna do it myself. I'm glad you went back to palmrolling, definitely makes life so much easier! But you seemed to have done a great job maintaining your hair on your own, thank you so much for sharing those struggles throughout your journey! The main thing i'm struggling with is trying to be patient enough to make my new growth loc because they unravel after i wash them, but now i'm getting over that and just letting them be and continuing my routine as is (i retwist once a month). Can't wait to read more of your comments about palm rolling versus interlocking, keep it up!

how often do you retwist or planning to go to the loctitian to get a retwist? just curious :)

Your locs are beautiful!!! I can definitely relate to the whole DIY thing, but there's nothing like having someone else work on you!!! I usually space my loctician visits out cuz I don't like to twist my hair too often, but it is definitely an experience when I go!!!

Gorgeous as usual, sis!

Do you know what products your loctician uses? (forgive me if this is mentioned in a post, lol)

I love being a DIYer but I want to find a loctician for pampering days lol. They aren't very plentiful here in SoCal for some reason.

I hear you. I latched for one year and personally did my first palmroll last week. It came out good! I think I like how my hair looks after being palmrolled versus latched. The only issue is that I wash my hair weekly and I don't want to retwist/palmroll every week so as not to weaken the roots. After washing my hair yesterday, I let the fuzz BE. Is retwisting/palmrolling once a week too much?

Ayodele, in my opinion once a week is overkill...once every 2-3 weeks i think is better because you aren't overtwisting it and i think that's a good amount of time to retwist any newgrowth that has unraveled after you washed it.

Hey how are yah? :)
When u said your stylist gasped in horror because of the apple cider vinegar.. why and did you stop using it? I wash my hair every 3-4 weeks and I used ACV everytime I wash it also.

I only go to the shop about every 2-3 months...but I think it's necessary mostly because no one can wash your hair like a PROFESSIONAL! I'm never confident I've gotten all the shampoo out....
