Readers Say What?: Loc Emergency!! To chop or not chop?

I saw those words in my Loc Rocker inbox this morning and I was like, "Uh oh..a fellow loc rocker needs our help!" I put on the cape and got to readin'...

Dear Brittany,
I am contemplating cutting my locs and went to get them cut yesterday but the salon was closed!!! Going ultra short tapered, dye of course... but having cold feet. My locs are getting long..(mid back) and heavy. ITs been 4 years and I need some renewal in my life...I was all for it yesterday actually very anxious to cut them off and begin a new journey...but today....arrgh..... Your thoughts?

Sincerely,
Short Hair Do Care

Any advice, fam? I think she should chop. A new cut and color may be just what she needs to to get that spark she feels like she's missing. And of course, if she hates it, guess what? It's hair...it'll just grow back. What do y'all think?

Basically I agree with you B. If she wants to chop, chop it. It is just hair, and it will all grow back and she can always start over if she wants to. If she feels like she wants a new change in life, then getting a hair cut is really sometimes the best medicine.

I feel you should keep them shoulder length...i do know that the more it grows, the more heavier it is...keep it shoulder length or a little over so you can rock different styles

I think she should cut it because she had 4 years of growing and finally she got the length that she wanted...now she wants, no NEEDS a change..this is true for any hairstyle that a person has had for a while. You reach that deadlock of "WHAT DO I DO NOW?"...a cut and color may help her enjoy her locs and learn how versatile they can be and help her remember why she got them

From @Noireboss1 on Twitter:

"get them cut into layers. a 90 degree layered cut to be precise. Will remove weight and increase some of her styling options."

My locs are past my waist and I sometimes feel like this young sister. I recommend cutting them mid length - she will MISS her locs.

Hello, i think she should just cut it short first, like most people are saying, and if she dnt like it stll, well then, chop.

I think she should cut them shorter before cutting them all off. Almost 4 years in I went through that, my locs were long and heavy. I did a short cut, dyed them black when they were red and felt renewed! 4 years after that it happened again... they were long all over again and hot and heavy so in June I chopped them again in a tilt and I feel better about them. This time for me I was going through wanting to cut them all off... but I'm glad I didn't I would be lost with out them

Not that my locs are anywhere near the length I want them to be yet, I know what she's going through to some degree. I've felt (at least once a week) like getting a comb and picking them apart .... ok, I have done that to a couple of them, but afterwards can never keep going.

I think this sister should do the chop if that is what she wants to do. We have spent so much time obsessing about our hair that once we achieve the length we want (and again, I have not yet - 5 months loc'ed), we forget that it's JUST HAIR.

I think once you realize that you can grow it, the mental stress of "growing it" becomes less of a catalyst for our actions. If homegirl wants a different style, by all means go for it. She can always loc again, can grow again, and I'm sure that over the years she has learned to appreciate what flows from her scalp and takes care of it better than she ever did.

Off my soapbox now...going to the mirror to obsess over my hair! :P

I sit on hair decisions for a week. The fact that she still didn't want to do it today leads me to believe that she might just be tired of the length and weight. Cut shorter and then decide if she wants to completely cut them.

I say chop. Sometimes, it's as simple as needing a change. I'm all for it.

I went in to get my locs cut. I really wanted to cut off a few inches but I couldn't bring myself to do more then about an inch. In other words...I chickened out. I told my locs that I would never cut them again. But now I want to.

The point is you just have to do it. I am telling myself the same thing. Just go for it. Sure you will miss what you had but you will love what you got. They are locs!! They are gonna be fab no matter what.

Sounds like she needs something new so I say she should go ahead and chop, it's just hair it grows back and sometimes you just need a big change.
