Your locs will grow...chill out!

The above picture is of my locs at their different stages. My hair is now at the medium length and some folx look at it and think "Wow, her locs grew so long and so quickly. I wonder if mine can do the same." Are you kidding me? Of course yours can and will do the same.

But come on my sisters, this obsession that some of us have with hair length has got to stop. There are few things that are consistent in this world but you can always guarantee that you'll be paying taxes forever and that your hair will grow. Will it grow as long as (insert name)'s? Maybe. Maybe not. Will it grow as quickly as (insert name)'s? Maybe. Maybe not.

Focus on the health and condition of your scalp. Play around with styles. Stand in the mirror and appreciate the beauty that is your crown. Enjoy each stage. But let go of the idea that your locs will be down your back in 3 months.

Thank you! I'm tired of people obsessing over hair growth and length. There has to come to a point where you just have to get over it and just let your hair be, and appreciate it for what it is regardless of how short or long it is. I esp. really don't understand it when some people say "my hair goal is to grow 6 inches in two months in time for prom." What, you can just magically make your hair grow a certain length? The obsession does need to stop. Long hair is overrated. I wish people can accept short hair as being just as beautiful, and that no matter what, it WILL grow. Sorry for the rant lol, I'm just tired of the hair growth/length obsession that some people have.

Locks will certainly grow. I say enjoy your length as it is today. Because one day when there way down I mean way down your back you will be wishing for those short days :)

First, I'm so glad I have found your hair blog - Clumps of Mascara is BRILLIANT (and it taught me to put on eye makeup. My mother thanks you!).

I'm a sisterlocked sister and I can tell you that the obsession with hair length is EVERYWHERE. And yes, I have been guilty of it too. A couple months ago I decided to stop sweating the growth. My hair is crazy healthy, and crazy beautiful! That's all I can ask for! And your hair is absolutely GORGEOUS!

Thank you for this post LocRocker. I too was obsessed with the length--or lack there--of my hair. October 13th will make it one year since I've had locs, but I only started wearing them freely, on their own this month. Up until September, my hair was in braid extensions, while my hair was locked. Reason being, I was not pleased with the--chin--length of my locs and thought I'd appreciate them more once they've reached shoulder length. After I took out the extensions earlier this month, I had my ((Oprah voice))"Ah Hah" moment and realised that I was cheating myself of my own loc journey. So now I proudly wear my chin-length locs appreciating each stage and knowing that, yes, my hair will grow.

I must admit I sooo needed to hear this. I constantly look in the mirror and I look back at old pics and stay on your blogsite encouraging myself. I am in my 3rd month of locdom and it is a JOURNEY. My hair has never been this healthy and I wish I would have made this decision years ago. Hey...better late than never. Keep inspiring us B.

Thanks,

L.Rucker

I will admit, that I have moaned for long hair. But I accept reaility that it is a process, but will be excited when I can put it in a ponytail. No matter how small. lol There is not regrets here on the decision to be natural or going to loc. I just love all the wonderful and beuatiful styles ahead of me. Plus I play in my hair so much. hair foreplay. lol

Great post. I've seen so many new dreads become discouraged/give up because their hair doesn't grow as quickly as they thought.

I think if more people lost the focus on length and paid more attention to the health and beauty of their own hair there'd be less 2/3/4+ time locers and fewer frustrated newbies.

I have loved your locs since you started (or first started posting about them)! It's a matter of patience...something that I teach my 2nd graders about everyday. My locs have certainly reiterated patience in my life.
