How To: A Hair Refresher

Soooo I visited my Mommy for Mother's Day and pretty much raided her spa room. I moved out 7 years ago and my Mom did not hesitate to turn my old room into a "spa room". Talk about being missed, uh? Ca-learly me moving back was never an option. The closet, under the bed and the huge boudoir in the room are filled with butters, salts, oils, beads, stamps and a slew of other crafts that she was never into when I lived at home.

A peek inside the boudoir...

I pulled some of the oils out.

This isn't even half of them. Mommy has well-known oils like...

...and then she's got other oils that leave me thinking WTF.

Like...who knew there was a Black Pepper essential oil? And Ylang Ylang III? I didn't even know there was a Ylang Ylang II. So I grabbed the stuffs I was going to be using and set them out.

Took a glass spray bottle and filled it up with water...

Put in a good 1.5 tablespoons of glycerin.

And somewhere between 5-7 drops of rosemary and peppermint oil.

Shake shake shake..
And  ta da! A wonderful hair refresher. I sprayed this all over my scalp and locs. I saturated the locs until they were dripping wet and headed outside in the Florida sunshine. Loved. It. Of course I made a ton more of this stuff to take home with me. But I had to do it quietly because dipping in Mommy's spa room is like dipping in my make-up/nail polish stash. The culprit's outcome is never a good one.

A few hours later, I caught Mommy standing over me staring at my locs. She asked me to take out my loc adornment. And so I did. Then she went to her room and shut the door. Five minutes later and...

My Mom is soooo talented! Who knew she could make loc adornments? Of course I had her make me 7 more. Ha!! More on that later!

Let me know if you try or have tried the hair refresher.

I've been using that type of hair freshner since day 1 of being natural, it is only now that I've started using essential oils in it which has given it an extra boost! My locs love it, I use it like a couple of times in a day. My oh my though, your mom has such a gigantic treasure trove of essential oils and other goodies...I'm so jealous! All i have is 2 essential oils in my box lol, naturally I'm gonna get more but not nearly to the amount that your mom has got! wowee, love it! hehe. Will you dare to test out all of those essential oils and give us little reviews on each scent? :) So glad that spritz is working for ya it is so simple, all natural, and just yummy.

Oh and what a beautiful loc adornment. A friend of mine has made so many for me over the years, one day I need to write a post about them because he's put so much creativity into them. I've made some of my own but I can never make them as nicely as he does.

umm yes that cabinet full of fabness rocks!

Quick question, is glycerin a pretty heavy product that can be sticky?? Or is it something that just needs to be diluted for everyday use?

Thanks!!!

Love this post! I have been trying to find the right mixture to use as a daily refresher. I have the Taliah Waajid mist bodifier (just something abt it I don't like) and the Oyin Greg Juice (better, not a fan if the smell). I will have to try your mixture.

Does it have to be mixed in a glass jar?

Ness---> I never get in the mood to make stuff until I get to my Mom's house. She's got like...EVERYTHING! I have a good 4 essential oils. When I get back to my Mom's, I'll test some more hair-friendly oils, butters and potions. And yesss, I LOVE loc adornments. I'm not that patient to make them but I made a few that came out pretty good. They add such personality to locs. Love 'em!

AfroChyk---> Girl no...she doesn't read this blog. I hope not. LOL!

Bsquared---> Riiiight! Moms definitely needs to open a shop. Shejust doesn't have the time. I wish I was rich so I could give her a ton of money to do nothing but make potions all day and sell them.

Goldilocs---> Glycerin is a humectant so it will not absorb in your locs. You don't HAVE to dilute it but I highly recommend that you do so. Otherwise...yep, the locs will be a wee bit sticky.

drrph---> Whatcho mean you don't like Oyin's Greg Juice? Girl stop! LOL, I'm playin'! This is the best little refresher b/c you can add and take out whatever you want. And no ma'am...you don't have to use a glass bottle. A plastic one will work just fine!

Hi B!

I too am a Floridian. Tamponian...wait no, I don't like that... Anyway, do you find that the glycerin attracts bugs? It's such a sweet smell... Love your posts as always!!

Kimberly---> 813, stand uuuup!!! Man, I miss Tampa Bay and all my good times at USF. Hmmm, I've never found glycerin to be a bug-attractor. But then again I don't use THAT much. Dilute it as much as you can without getting rid of it. :) Thanks for the love, sis!

i don't add glycerine to my hair refresher because after a couple of days my hair starts to smell. i like to add witch hazel to keep my scalp feeling fresh...i use rosemary, lavender and aloe juice mixed with witch hazel and water.
