Doing baby girl's hair...

I saw this over at Afroniquely You and I was just amazed. YouTube-r, Sista Chick has a series of videos that shows how she washes, detangles and styles her daughter's hair. Little Chick has a head full of beautiful natural hair that at first glance can look a little cumbersome, but Sista Chick made the routine look like a breeze.

She was gentle and it looked as if she really enjoyed doing her daughter's hair. And I didn't hear baby girl cry or wince not one time.

My Mom is the greatest person in the world, but I wish she would have taken the time to learn and do my hair instead of throw a perm up in it. And even before I had a perm, I don't ever remember "hair day" ever being a pleasant experience. It was terrifying. Kudos to Sista Chick! Watching her series of videos really opened my mind up because while I'd love to loc my daughter's hair, I really want HER to be able to make that decision. It's great to know that in the meantime, I've got some tips of how to keep her scalp and hair healthy and beautiful without leaving her in tears and leaving me frustrated.

Why I'm talking about "my daughter" as if she exists is beyond me. Don't even give that "eye" y'all, because I'm going to be one of those first time almost 40 Mothers. Hmmm mmmm....

How was your experiences getting your hair done as I young brown girl?

Since I'm from the old school I remember my mom straightening my hair with the hot comb! Boy was it hot and it's a wonder I still have my ears and glad the scares from the forehead went away. Lol! At an early age I always admired hair so I started straightening and styling my own hair. Sad to say my mom wasn't the one who put a perm in my hair. Yes, it was me. I also put a perm in my daughters hair because it seems like that was just the thing to do. Now, I'm glad I know better and my daughter is also natural and does youtube videos (prettydimples01)

I've always associated hair with DRAMA, DRAMA, and MORE DRAMA lol. I always either had a perm on my head or had to wear braid extentions, my mother always wanted me to get it done that way and that's just the way it was. Nowadays she just presses her hair instead of perming it. I wish that most mothers would at least learn to take care of their daughter's natural hair and let HER decide if she wants a perm or not. I just think it's a shame that at such a young age we are conditioned to think that our natural hair is something that needs to be hidden, fried, or straightened to death. I have no idea if I'd ever want to have kids or if I can/will have kids, but if i do i'll be certain that a perm will never fall on her head, unless she decides to.

I used to go and get presses. That meant burned ears and a scorched forhead sometimes. My beautician made the best homemade mini coconut pies (and sold them out of her shop), so the taste of those always made me feel better.

I used to want a pony-tail like the little girl in the old re-run, Make Room for Daddy....so my Mom at my request went out and bought me one. This was in 1st grade, had my 1st crush, and while blowing him a kiss, lost my button on pony-tail for the 1st time!

Another lady that used to do my hair warned me to stop wearing those pony-tails. It was my style of choice. She warned that if I didn't stop slicking my hair back that tight that my babyhairs would start to get thin...they did.

Eventually, Mom gave into my request for a perm. My Aunt (may she R.I.P.) used to exclaim "she sho' can get thair hair straight). Eventually I started doing it myself and after sho' gettin' that hair straight, I always wondered why it wouldn't grow, why it had no bounce, no volume, and then came...

Braids - my trademark. I wore them well for years off and on, but eventually started really digging natural heads that I saw walking around. I wanted that, but just wasn't sure.

Eventually a bad stint with braids caused me to do the big chop (#1). I rocked the 'fro. Eventually that led to a relapse, but I came back strong and did the big chop (#2) and now I'm 5 months locked and loving it. Ok, it's a love/hate relationship sometimes, but I know now that I will try to instill in my daughter what I myself was not privy to. Straightening my hair, weighing it down, covering it up, taming it, not getting it wet (I'm not that kind of girl)...that was just the thing to do. I'm slowly finding peace in my decision to be free of all that drama! @ NESSessary..you are right. It is drama packed! It never ends.
I want to teach her to be happy with what "she got" and rock it like it's going out of style.
