Carol's Daughter "How To" Locs Video

A Loc Rocker reader sent me the following video and wanted to know what I think about it. She said she saw it on Locentricity so hey Ms. Da Da!

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a hater of Carol's Daughter. A lot of veteran naturals are. They feel as if her products have changed over the years and have introduced more synthetic ingredients. Folx say her products were more natural when she had a store out in Brooklyn. They fail to realize that with mass production and being placed in stores around the globe, preservatives HAVE to be added to prolong shelf life. I understand that and while I don't use Carol's Daughter products reguarly, I will always love and support Lisa Price. She is a pioneer for natural hair and natural beauty and is an inspiration to us entrepreneurs everywhere. Plus I've met her in person and love her aurora.

Buuuuut, I wouldn't say I would use all of the products in the video on my locs. And here's why.

Rosemary Mint Shampoo: Actually, I've sampled this and LOVE the way it made my hair feel. It smells divine and cleanses thoroughly. I find it to be a great deep cleansing shampoo for loc rockers.

Tui Hair Smoothie: I've used this before on a short fro and I liked it. It's okay on locs. But then again, I've never been that much of a fan of cream based products on my locs. I wish they worked but I find that they get stuck in the locs and it takes a friggin' water pressure thingie to get it out. No ma'am. Instead of the Tui Hair Smoothie, I would go with the Tui Leave In Conditioner. It's cream-free, smells good and gives the locs that boost of moisture that some of us feel that we need after a wash.

Loc Butter: I've reviewed that here and I do NOT like it for locs. It's greasy and offers absolutely no hold. And it has beeswax in it which means it'll attract lint. I wouldn't even use this if I had 2-strand twists. While it smells good, it really feels more like a hair grease and doesn't offer a lick of hold.

So while I'm team Carol's Daughter, I wouldn't co-sign on this regimen for loc'd hair. But that's just me. I'm sure there are several loc rockers who use conditioners and beeswax based products with gorgeous locs.

Whatcha think?

I've always liked this video. Why CD took it off their site a few weeks ago after a site redesign, I'm not sure.

That said, I've always viewed videos - from loc lovers or professionals - as suggestions rather than edicts.

As to the products, I can't say much about their shampoos since I've not tried them.

However, I've got both the Tui leave in and smoothie. I like both for my 11 year old locs. The smoothie washes out with ACV and the leave-in has a pleasant but pungent smell so I only use a bit at a time.

We're in agreement about the Loc Butter though: I'd never use it on my locs. I do use it on occasion for my dauther's 2-strand twists. She likes the smell and I like the hold.

Her hair didn't look that differently to me. And is that how he retwists his clients' hair? Wow.

I've never tried these products but I've always wanted to.

You took the words right out of my mouth Mrs. Honey Dip...how was he retwisting her hair...not believable to me. Where is the palm roll or twist action? Where are the clips...? I know you can twist and palm roll without the clips but what he was doing made me think he was scared of her locs.

I use the Black Vanilla shampoo but I haven't ventured near the conditioners yet.

LMAO at Skeempretty08's "...what he was doing made me think he was scared of her locs". His approach did look a little ((clearing my throat)) Dainty! With that being said, I thought about purchasing C'sD Loc Butter at Amazon.com until I read the ingredients. Waaay too many oils!+ Shea Butter+ beeswax= product buildup. Although the ACV rinse that Natasha...mentioned would help, I don't feel like doing an ACV rinse every single time I wash my locs. I find C'sD styling products more suitable for loose hair, as they're easier to wash out. On a side note, I do favor her Almond Cookie Body line.

Is it me, or did the before and after pictures at the end look identical?

Ummm, yeah...they do look pretty darn similar don't they?

I've actually had a bit of luck. I just used CD's loc butter for the first time, and it is actually the only product that has given me a good amount of hold. It is a little greasy, but it'll work for now. I've had locs for a little under a year, so I'm still experimenting with products.

I've used Jane Carter Solution and Jamaican Mango and Lime before, but they didn't really do anything. Oh, and the Tui leave in conditioner does smell really good.

Mmm..her hair looked exactly the same and he wasn't even retwisting her hair properly. If anything, I would probably try the shampoo.

Tried one of the leave-in sprays, and while it smelled nice (I think it was the Black Vanilla spray?) it didn't do a damn thing. I didn't even bother with the rest of her products--I'm happy with what I have.
