Natural Head Spotlight: Liane's Summer Spritz

I know there loose some natural heads who read Loc Rocker so I'm going to do a better job at posting content that can inspire and help them out too. Liane is  fabulous reader who emailed me some time ago about how she can keep her afro nice and conditioned on her trip to Jamaica. She told me that she would be doing quite a bit of swimming in salt water and chlorine.

I suggested a daily spritz of glycerin, water and essential oils.

Here's what she said:

The glycerin/water/mint/rosemary mix was fantastic. I preconditioned my hair before every swim with some free sample cream of nature jojoba moisture conditioner (I don't use the stuff normally but it's a whole bottle of free sampler). Then I did a co-wash with the trader joe's conditioner and then a spray of the glycerin/water leave in and rub down with olive/coconut oil. My hair and scalp sing your praises. Thank you so much for your suggestions.

My fro LOVED that little mixture. Remember to use a liberal amount of glycerin as too much of that stuff will make your hair a sticky mess.

Rock on my afro sportin' sisters!

Curly Heads

How gorgeous is this picture?

That's my amazing and fabulous friend Jenny and our nephew, Addae. They both have beautiful heads of hair. Jenny is currently Miss Black Florida and Addae is a budding kiddy model. I featured Addae's Mommy here.

I love them.

Another Natural Head Rockstar!

Whooooa!! Brown girls are blowin' up rock stages all over the world. I LOVE this! Check out Shingai from The Noisettes out of UK. She is gorgeous. And look at the fro!

She almost makes me want my loose hair again.

Nah I'm kidding--she's fly though. And after seeing so many brown girls rockin' out on stage, I think it's time that I invest in an electronic guitar and really be the rockstar I know I am.

I'm fo real, y'all...

Watch the vid!

You can find more about this group at this post from Holistic Locs.

ETA:
I've been jammin' out to The Noisettes all weekend!

Natural Head Spotlight: Yara Shahidi

Ya'll know I loooove featuring little girls with natural hair styles. The beautiful Jaida has me envious of her gorgeous locs. Malia Obama had me reminiscing about the days of having braids and twists.

Check out Yara Shahidi's curls!

How beautiful is she? And look at that little pose. Soooo cute and classy. She's headed to 5th grade and still rocking her hair naturally. When I was headed to 5th grade my hair had already been permed and I had noooo idea how my hair looked in its natural state. Seeing little brown girls rockin' natural hair says a looooot to me. Rock on, Persian beauty!
You can find out more about Yara here.
Peace and loc've.

Natural Head Spotlight: Malia Obama

President Obama has been President for little under 6 months and I am still in shock. I campaigned for him. I voted for him. And I traveled to D.C. to see him get sworn in. But every time I see him and his beautiful family I am STILL in...awe.

Yes, I pay attention to the Obama administration. I'm not that airheaded. But I also gawk at the First Lady's fits, Sasha's funny faces and Malia's natural-esque hairstyles.

That's right....I love that Malia sometimes rocks 2-strand twists and cornrows. These are styles that I wore as a little girl. And to be honest, I hated them. I was always "the only Black girl" in my elementary school classes. When I wore hairstyles like this I always felt "different". I didn't have the long and straight hair like my classmates. And I hated the questions that came along with wearing braids and twists.

"How does your hair do that?"

"How long does it take?"

"Why does it look like that?"

Drove me up a wall. And it gave me another reason to hate my hair. I'm sure 11-year old Malia doesn't mean to make a statement with her hair. But for us once little Black girls, her natural and braided styles say a lot.

Rock on, First Honey!

Natural Head Spotlight: Cousin B

One of my favorite people in the entire world is my cousin, Brit.

Yes, this chick has the same name as me. LOL, no fair. I was born first so she was named after me. HAAA!!

I'm kidding...to be honest, I don't even know if we're cousins.

My Uncle married her Aunt. Does that make us related by marriage?

Who cares....I love the girl like no other. We both went to the University of South Florida together and went through a tooooon of experiences together. We even sat next to each other at graduation. She truly is one of my greatest friends.

I haven't seen her in a few months though and was shocked to see that she not only grew out her hair but has beautiful naturally curly hair. Dig it:

I love love loooove her hair. Those coils are insanely beautiful.

And here we are with my girl Krys...she ain't natural but she's got a fly wrap..lol!

3 beautiful ladies rocking 3 different hairstyles. *sigh* I love the diversity of Black hair.

Nappy, straight and curly. Gotta love it!

Love you, cuz!
